Couldn't see a thread, so thought we could start a new one.

This year's nominees;

  • Mbappe
  • Lautaro Martinez
  • Ademola Lookman
  • Toni Rudiger
  • Alejandro Grimaldo
  • Dani Carvajal
  •  Lamine Yamal
  • Bukayo Saka
  •  Hakan Calhanoglu
  • William Saliba
  • Rodri
  •  Harry Kane
  •  Declan Rice
  •  Vitinha
  •  Cole Palmer
  • Vinicius Jr
  •  Dani Olmo
  •  Florian Wirtz
  •  Martin Ødegaard
  •  Mats Hummels
  • Erling Haaland
  • Nico Williams
  •  Granit Xhaka
  •  Artem Dovbyk
  •  Toni Kroos
  • Jude Bellingham
  •  Ruben Dias
  •  Phil Foden
  •  Federico Valverde
  • Emiliano Martínez

First time since 2003 there's no Messi or Ronaldo.

Is it me, or if you looked at the list from 2000s, none or hardly any of these would be good enough to get in?

I'll go for Dibu 😎.

if england had won the euros it would be bellingham

if brazil had won the copa it would be vini jr

as a result it could be closer rather than a runnaway winner, should be rodri to be fair but lots of good players there

lamal has to be a cert for golden boy, of course when barca should be on their arse they pop up with the best kid in world football 3 years out of 4

Liverpool fans going waah that Alison hasn't been nominated, going so far to say that the Ballon D'or is rigged.

I read the article but can't find it, so I will summarise. Blah blah blah, perpetual victims cry a river, yada yada yada.

The way these work then Dani Carvajal won La Liga, Champions League and Euros might be a dark horse. He even scored in the Champions League final which voters

Messi won for a lot less in 2021

Declan Rice being on the list is bizarre. Anonymous for Arsenal and England but appears in the list of the best of the best.

It’s got to be Rodri, won with Spain and City.

Funny, isn't it?  When it comes to PL awards, people don't want to see Foden with POTS or Haaland be in TOTS over Watkins, despite both having won the title with City.

Ballon D'Or?  You have to have won something.

I think it's more that with the balon dor in particular people know that's how that thing works not that they want it / like it

Bit of an uninspiring list really, Bellingham maybe if he'd had a storming Euro's.

2005 for comparison.

You also had Ronaldo, Figo, Pirlo, Thuram, Xavi, Roberto Carlos, Viera, Cannavaro, Rooney who all finished outside the top 25!

This is just completely untrue though

He's a great player that's overrated to **** because he's English, he's not world class bar the idea that there rent that many great DMCs about at the moment

Rodri being the prime example as to why, he's twice the player

Maybe harsh on him because every English player is the same, didn't look good under Southgate but not enough was said about the madness of England setting up in way that gave rice 100+ touches of the ball per game, watching him for England no one will ever convince me that his movement off the ball is good enough to receive the ball in the areas that he should be in, he's always the square ball to nowhere stood still with no momentum

He shouldn't be in the Ballon D'or list for sure, and no argument that he's crap for England. Everyone has been crap for England.

But I do wonder how much of Arsenal people watch

He's been excellent for them. He was one of their best players last season in a season where they would have won the league if it wasn't for the fact we live in an era of Man City dominance.

Is he worth 100m? Probably not. Is he as good as Rodri? Obviously not because Rodri is one of the best midfielders of all time.

But he's not anonymous for Arsenal in any way shape or form. He's one of their best players :D
