Guest Posted August 23 Posted August 23 I've just watched the documentary 'Sven' on Amazon Prime. I liked him as England manager, but never really knew much more about him. The documentary is wonderful. It's heartwarming and interesting and it's just made me love the man a little. There's something about him that's so charming. Of course, he has terminal cancer and the film deals with that as well. Filming started before his diagnosis. I highly recommend watching.
NoelVilla Posted August 26 Posted August 26 RIP. Watching Gothenburg win that UEFA Cup in 1982 is a great childhood memory. 1
maqroll Posted August 26 Posted August 26 Well, that's very sad indeed. 76 seems old to the young, and maybe it was, once. But it's too young to die, especially for a guy with a joy for living. Rest in peace, Sven. 2
Guest Posted August 26 Posted August 26 I didn't know much about him before I watched the documentary, I feel incredibly sad hearing this news. Incredible manager. Rest in peace.
sne Posted August 26 Posted August 26 Legend! Best Swedish manager ever and no one will ever come close to him again. 1
The_Steve Posted August 26 Posted August 26 I’m glad he got the Liverpool send off before he died. RIP.
ferguson1 Posted August 26 Posted August 26 Very sad indeed and seemed a likeable character. RIP Sven.
Giro Posted August 26 Posted August 26 Just on the bbc site reading about him. I knew he got caught out by a undercover reporter but didn’t realise Sven said he could get Beckham to villa 1
sne Posted August 26 Posted August 26 Huge part in how I became interested in football when I was a kid. What he did at IFK Göteborg should have been impossible. Indirectly lead to me becoming a Villa fan as watching IFK Göteborg got me also watching English football on the telly on Saturdays with Villa winning the title that year and becoming my team. Proper fair weather fan but in my defense I was 4-5 years old. He's also the reason I started following Sampdoria. Not sure people get just how big he is/was in Italy and how respected and loved he is by his former players. Really sad news. 1
sne Posted August 26 Posted August 26 Nice long article in the Gazzetta. Quote Eriksson, a gentleman, a globetrotter: a coach in love with football Sven-Göran Eriksson had the ability to calm you down and make you part of a whole. Even on days of pain, when you would rather throw in the towel. Sven could do it with players, with fans, with presidents, with journalists. He wasn't magnetic, nor seductive. It was just respect for others, an ancient form of good manners. "Respect is an important word. I have to respect you even if you don't have a good right foot, even if you're slow, even if you've never played in Serie A." He passed away at 76, Eriksson was taken away by pancreatic cancer. "I have cancer. That's it," that's what he said. And so Eriksson in recent times has never wasted a moment or energy getting angry, he has continued to devote himself to football (“I watched all the games of the Olympics and the European Championships”), to listen to the silences of Torsby, in Värmland, Sweden, where he was born in 1948. And he continued to feel life until the end, that beautiful and cursed and fragile thing he has always been in love with. “I have had a beautiful life. Maybe too beautiful. It is sad, but it is also beautiful. Take care of yourselves and take care of your life. Smile. And live it”. https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Estero/26-08-2024/morto-eriksson-addio-a-un-allenatore-gentiluomo.shtml?refresh_ce
Avfc96 Posted August 26 Posted August 26 He lived a great life, won a hell of a lot as a coach and certainly enjoyed himself away from football. In hindsight, unlucky not to have achieved more with England. RIP Sven. 1
delboy54 Posted August 26 Posted August 26 RIP Sven, thanks for all you did for England and for football in general. 1
Colin79 Posted August 26 Posted August 26 Really sad news. Happy he lived long enough to experience the love he got revisiting Sweden and Italy. Both seemed emotional and heartfelt.
TDR V2 Posted August 26 Posted August 26 The 5-1 against Germany away was probably the best England result I've witnessed in a pub. He had knowledge and charisma, unlike the recent England manager. 3
PaulC Posted August 28 Posted August 28 A true Gentleman and extremely likeable He will be sadly missed RIP
NoelVilla Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Fantastic story on Swedish TV yesterday about how Emilio Butragueno called Sven to ask if they would make a mistake if they signed Beckham. And Svennis said they should but added that they should be prepared for the chaos that will follow with fans and media. Butragueno had repiled: -We are Real Madrid. We have signed big name players before! Weeks later after the signing he had called back and said: -You were right about the chaos. This was something new to us.

Richard Dunne had some good stories about Sven a while back when they were at City Sven let them have a few drinks on pre season in Sweden but the players got back late and tried to sneak back in but Sven and Tord Grip were awake at the bar playing music. He also said would contact Dunne th4 next season asking how the players were getting on. He was a players managet 1
