Liverpool and Scotland great Hansen 'seriously ill'

Former Liverpool and Scotland centre-back Alan Hansen is "seriously ill in hospital", the Anfield club said on Sunday.

The 68-year-old was a key part of the great Reds teams of the 1970s and 1980s, winning eight First Division titles, three European Cups and two FA Cups.

Hansen won promotion to the Scottish Premier Division with Partick Thistle before joining Liverpool in 1977 for the start of a successful 14-year spell.

"The club is currently in contact with Alan's family to provide our support at this difficult time, and our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and all of the Hansen family," Liverpool said.

The Premier League club called their "legendary" former captain a "defender of the utmost elegance".

Hansen, who also won four League Cups with Liverpool, appeared 26 times for his country and was a member of Scotland's 1982 World Cup side.

After retiring in 1991, he appeared as a pundit on Match of the Day from 1992 until 2014.

Hansen's former Match of the Day colleague Gary Lineker wrote on X: "Horrendous news. Thoughts are with Alan, Janet and all the family."

I'm sure someone out there might be interested in this. I feel bad because all I thought about was how much I have never appreciated his comments or punditry and that he's always come across as a complete knob (please shoot me down if I am being unkind). That said, I'm just out of hospital and don't wish that kind of food on anyone, so I wish him a good recovery.

Hope he pulls through, but I think he's more famous for the "never win anything with kids" quote for people under a certain age.

Fond memories of Motd in the 90s with him and Lynam.

Looks bad.for him.  Actually liked his punditry and he was a fantastic footballer. Hope he pulls through!

Sad to hear and hope he recovers.

He was a good pundit though he became a bit of a cliche with shoddy defending. Surprised he never popped up ever on TV since he retired

What was the story behind his departure from the BBC? 58 was pretty young to be effectively retiring. I seem to remember he was essentially forced out, but maybe I'm imagining that.

Nah. I hate it when someone who had negative sides is suddenly feted when they die/get ill. No need to feel bad if you weren't keen.

He talked of the stress and anxiety of doing it if I remember it. I think he was burnt out with it all and left of his own accord. Very quiet reserved man by all accounts..

I wouid say the centre back partnership he had with Lawrenson was the best there's ever been In English football.

Decided it wasn't for him and walked away from millions to be happy, rather than outstaying your welcome by a decade, then rightly being retired then complaining about being persecuted for being white male and old.

Nonsense it was a well known fact he suffered from severe anxiety. Which got worse over the years. He had very low self esteem.

As much as I dislike Lawro, the fact is that was right. It's all about diversity now and he doesn't fit that bill. Everything from kit launches to punditry seems to feature the demographic that make up about 5% of the people that actual attend football matches.

That's 2024 in a nutshell and isn't confined to just football. In South Africa it's called positive discrimination. And it has made the country even worse. Somehow.

But as for Hansen, he seems a top bloke and I wish him well.
