More planes landing than departing will eventually cause a safety issue. 

Emirates say that the baggage handling for their flights is handled by their people and they are staffed sufficiently to manage the demand.

I know Jet2 do similar, they employ their own people to manage their flights.

This is LHR not having enough staff. A problem an awful lot of airports in the UK seem to be suffering from because they lost them during the pandemic. Staff went off to work for Amazon etc and didn't return (its absolutely the same in the Taxi industry) but the airports budgets don't allow them the scope to increase the wages to the levels required to recruit more staff on minimum wage and the time to train them and then there's the DBS backlog because anyone airside needs an advanced DBS and serious references. LHR probably haven't even got the staff levels right to cope with the Admin required for the vetting process. Shit like this happens when there is virtually full employment and immigration policies such as we now have

To be fair I've started working for DHL who do EasyJet baggage, ramp and check in and they are paying over £3 an hour more than the living wage, double overtime going up to triple at weekends for the summer holiday, then £1000 bonus in October if you've not gone sick.  I can assure anyone that it's a better environment to work in than Amazon.  It seems to me that the airport don't actually employ many of the staff, as Emirates say, the airlines either have their own staff or outsource it to DHL, Menzies, Swissport etc and probably do have enough to get by.  The DBS isn't that much of an issue, they give out 'escorted' passes to people who haven't quite got the full security pass and is a relatively minor problem.  You can't get an airside driving pass though and that makes things a bit tighter.  I've been there 4 weeks and people on my training course have started getting their full pass so hopefully things will improve quickly.

In fact there’s one police officer who has been sent at least 4 this week.

Actually I read it and thought, "it looks like Bicks has a new job in communications."

Emirates may have enough handlers.   But Emirates can't unload a plane if its on a taxiway waiting for other airlines to load/offload.

Emirates and LHR resolved their issues before this topic was even started 

essentially nothing happened  ... LHR won't cancel any of their Slots and Emirates agreed to a cap ( without an actual figure being put on the cap :) )

technically both companies saved face , though both looked  a bit stupid in the first place

No strikes for BA staff

Strike action by hundreds of British Airways workers at Heathrow has been called off, after staff accepted an 8% pay rise offer.

The GMB and Unite unions said more than 75% of members backed the pay deal. 

A total of 700 workers - mostly check-in staff - had been set to strike during the summer over a 10% pay cut imposed during the pandemic.

Workers will also get a one-off bonus and the reinstatement of extra pay for irregular shifts.

Unite said the offer, which will be paid in several stages, is worth 13% in total. 

A spokesman for British Airways said the company was "delighted with this positive news".

Isn’t it wider than baggage handlers and check in staff? I mean if the groundcrew who Marshall the aircraft, tow the aircraft from the gates, put the chocks in, operate the refuelling bowsers/ground fuel lines, connect the ground cooling, move steps into place, service the aircraft, clean the aircraft, replenish the food and water, ensure the right baggage and cargo goes on the right aircraft, make sure the CofG is correct, make sure the manifests are correct, operate the baggage checking (including X-ray machines), sweep the runways, check for FOD, man the security points and a load of other jobs too long to list - their absence absolutely would have security and health and safety impacts. So I agree it’s primarily a labour availability issue, but nearly everything has some involvement in safety to one degree or another, when you are operating an airport.

There are currently no groundcrew vacancies at Heathrow Airport that I can see. A few Conveyor belt engineers, general odd job men for the terminals and plenty of analysts / lwayers / reward managers / etc in totally not safety related roles
