What era (decade) was the best for you and why?

What is it with the weird sweets you wouldn't eat at any other point during the year? Every Christmas me and my sister would get a HUGE box of Turkish Delight. No chocolate, just a huge tub of pink, sweeten gelatine. Why on earth did my mother think that was some sort of exotic treat?

Never even saw those boxes in shops (did see the bar that was chocolate wrapped.)

And those boxes of orange and lemon slices. Who buys Matchmakers outside of Christmas?

That said I would happily buy and in fact have unsuccessfully tried to buy chocolate cherry liqueurs outside of Christmas (at a sensible price)

Ooh yes, the liqueur chocs. My favourites were the Harveys' Bristol Cream sherry ones.

We only ever had cheese footballs at Xmas, too.

Every-time  I goto Hungary my in laws give me a box of cherry liqueurs ( it’s sort of traditional to give and receive a small token gift when you arrive at someone’s home )

first time I met them 22 years ago I was polite , ate them and told them in very bad Hungarian how nice they were , and so 22 years later it still continues

It’s my own fault but i bloody  hate cherry liqueurs  :)

I’m also off to Hungary next week

Overlap with the Smelly Stuff thread.

I never wear perfume (or 'aftershave' as the clever marketers rebadged it to sell to men), but every Xmas for years my mother-in-law would buy me a bottle of the stuff, and I would politely thank her. Then one year I pointedly left them all out on the bathroom shelf, clearly still sealed and unopened, and she finally took the hint.

Early 2000’s, discovered clubbing and subsequently drugs. Had no major issue in pulling decent looking women. Had loads of friends, then left home went to uni and had a three year party (reflected in my grading), making a ton of new friends. Drank too much, smoked too much, partied and slept, for about 6-7 years.

All been downhill since, now I’m fat, bald and I have more contact with virtual acquaintances than I do real people/friends.

Shoot me now.

One for the boring thread definitely but there are differences between aftershave. cologne, etc. Down to the perfume concentration levels. The higher the level, the longer the smell lasts.

Aftershave is in the 1-3% bottom range with eau fraiche.

I’m not sure I’m brave enough for that :)

Probably for the smells thread by We do product testing for a French company  on aftershave and perfumes , I have about 1000 small sample bottles of unknown but really expensive aftershave / perfume in my office

brilliant for travelling as they are about 10ml so light and easy for hand luggage and you don’t have to bother bringing it home … all I need to do now is go on 1000 journeys

if anyone passing through Surrey likes crisps and aftershave feel free to pop in and say hi and  get a goodie bag of samples to leave with

Aye, as Simon and Garfunkel wrote:

A time it was and what a time it was, it was.

A time if innocence, a time of confidences. Long ago it must be, I have a photograph.

Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you.

Beautiful lyric.

Born in the late 80s, grew up in the 90s and life now seems a car crash due to technology.

I understand the nostolgia for 80s that I saw when growing up and even the 90s the early 20 year olds seem to crave now.

Im going 80s due to the music, films, colours, some tech but lack of and even the cold war giving a sense of pride (and fear). Though I didnt live any of it.

I think your spot on nicho about your technology point. If we had to go back to living like in the 90s where the technology was like that i would be happy with that.

Although that would mean we would have to  check ceefax for scores !

Best decade for me is... none of the them. I've had happy days and done lots of fun things, but always against the background of constant worry, low level depression (dysthymia) and knowledge that I can't achieve anything that requires consistency over time (Think studying, holding down a job or a relationship). All due to non diagnosed ADHD, which I discovered last year. As things stand my psychiatrist reckons I might be on to something, so has referred me to the ADHD specialists for an assessment. Been waiting six months. Only another eighteen to go. Thank you Conservatives for **** the NHS over once again. If I get treatment (possibly with medication) maybe I'll be able to live like a normal human being and, you know, do stuff. Maybe the 2020's will be my decade?

Beautiful lyric.

As long as it's not Bright eyes, always brings a tear to my eye that one, what a depressingly hard hitting song.
