Here is a Guardian article about Roberto Carlos playing for a pub team in Shrewsbury as part of a "dream transfer" raffle/fundraiser...

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/mar/05/a-shropshire-lad-roberto-carlos-becomes-a-pub-footballer

The article contains this:

Quote

“I’m delighted to come and make debut for an English team. I nearly joined Chelsea in 2007 and Aston Villa in 1995, but it didn’t work out.”

I don't remember hearing anything about this back in the day...searching the forums, I found a post where someone remembered us being linked with him, but I have to believe that this is the first time it has been confirmed. He had just finished up his last season with Palmeiras and ended up going to Inter Milan instead.

I'd love to hear the inside story on this and whether Deadly Doug messed up the deal...

I think it was Brian Little who didn't fancy him and actually Doug was all over it.  But I am ready to stand corrected!

To be fair to the club at the time Carlos would’ve been a 22 year old who hadn’t played in Europe yet in 1995, I was only 10 in 1995 though so I don’t remember anything about it at the time.

I think its a known story, I havent read it but it came out around the time Doug wrote his autobiography so it might be in that

Bugger off with your youthful boasts.
