Mark Draper.

Never though of him as a defensive midfielder. When we signed him, he was hyped as a playmaker.

Gordon Cowans, a CM who could put a tackle in and could pass excellently with both feet, great player, really great.

The question was for the Premier League era. He played one season in the PL era and made all of 11 appearances. One of the 5 best players in the history of the club, but not our best DCM of the PL era.

I may not have fully appreciated DCMs back then, so take it with a grain of salt, but how about Kevin Richardson? He was the #6 in the 1992-93 runner up team and the 1994 League Cup winning team.

Fair shout, I didn't read the OP properly (my trademark). It was more of a 2 man job back then, if one takes it forward, his mate covers and vice versa. Andy Townsend too I'd say but they were more an all around CM then.

Agreed about the Richardson-Townsend pairing. Before Townsend replaced Gary Parker, I remember Parker being the more attacking of the two between him and Richardson, but maybe my memory has faded. Plus we didn't get every game over here back then...

Carlos "The Rock" Sanchez or Rodrigo "The Thin One" Bentancur

Carlos Sanchez...the biggest mystery of a player. Could look really tidy and actually had decent passing technique, he just never timed them right 😂

Difficult question as the DM only really came in when Makelele arrived in the Premier League, before then the midfielders were expected to do everything

I wouldn't necessarily say that. In many cases they were all-rounders, but in some cases, midfielders already had the reputation as ball winning specialists in the early PL era...Ince, Batty, to some extent Keane...

Glen Whelan

He really was the closest to an out and out DCM that we've had since Gueye and did a great job. Seeing Petrov mentioned as a DCM makes me laugh. The guy was powderpuff in loads of games

I loved Barry but was CM for us. Don't think he played DCM until he left City

Not a classic DM but Barry ended up playing there, and for England, and was easily one of the best midfielders we've had in my lifetime.

He was one of the main attacking outlets at villa , to think he started out as a central defender, then left back , left wing, then box to box midfielder, and became as DM at City and for England, arguably the most complete player in premier league history,  there have been plenty of versatile players but none were good in all positions like Gareth Barry.
