Everton played very well second half, we had to put men behind the ball and counter it which we did excellently really. McGinn coming straight back in for Sanson is a mistake for me, he was invisible today.

Cash or Luiz man of the match, Watkins has one of those games where you feel Ings should have started but he could be excellent next week.

It's a disgace,  but unsurprising that Big Dunc couldn't out right condemn the bottle throwing. Came off like telling a child off for picking their nose.

I think we may need a striker in the summer if we are expecting those sort of points. Goals are a little sparse from our goal scorers at the moment. Unless we are playing the Man City way.

The ref could have done far more early on, his letting things go helped Everton who went all 90s on us.

Luiz all game was a yard off, its not his position and today showed. Sustained long balls or a physical team and he becomes far less effective. Something a new cdm will massively improve our possession by winning balls back putting us back on the front foot.

Was nervous for the last 30 as we really couldn't get hold of the ball, thought sansom would have come in instead of chuck who didn't get into the same.

3 points is 3 points though, only 14 more to get before I can relax, but we need that cdm in before Leeds.

I enjoyed that, proper old school battle. As SG said, there are different ways to win a football match, and we all knew what kind of game it was going to be. It's obvious that he's put a bit of steel into the side, long may it continue. 

Also, I made a conscious decision to watch the game without going near the match thread until after the final whistle, and having now read it I realise what a good choice it was. Childish arguments and constant snipes at our 'shit' players (and the ref, who I thought was perfectly OK). I'll be keeping away in future, it's so much more enjoyable.

Yeah I think we tried. We were hassled by Everton in the second half and probably hurried into poor passes. 
I think today was another example of why we need a big imposing defensive mid. If we had someone to win headers in front of the two centre backs it would nullify a lot of their threat today.

Ugly win for the villa we have played better and lost this season so did well to see it out … could easily have been different today

Great team performance. A very important win and lifts us clear of the mess at the bottom prior to this mid-season break.

I liked the way the SJM, Luis, Ramsey and Buendia controlled the ball in the first half and gave us command of the game. A tricky match given the Big Dunc affect and the way the ball was launched around the pitch in the second half to counteract our midfield. a very professional performance and the one we may have lost in the past.

The match pretty much bypassed Coutinho but the minutes he got will be very valuable in getting him up to speed.

Both Cash and Digne were good and participated in most of the attacks in the first half. Hopefully Emi M has an improved clean sheet clause in the new contract. Ollie was so/so but worked as hard as you expect.

Loved the way Emi Buendia extracted revenge on Mena by dodging between his legs for the excellent near post run & header. When he finds his shooting boots he pose a significant threat.

A difficult game for the ref, given the commitment of both sides and i thought he did ok.

A great start to the weekend and puts us in good shape to really push on now, UTV

Very proud to be supporting a classy club today vs that small time outfit. Everton have become an awful little club , manager and fans. I was surprised how low they sunk. Hope they go down. Our staff and players can leave with their heads held very high indeed.

Very happy. We will take our deserved double over them.

I also thought the ref did okay - should have booked Richarlison early on, but other than that he was alright.

Nine yellow cards in that one and Richarlison didn't get one!

Looked to me like he was rather sad he hadn’t done it himself. Let’s hope they get a game behind closed doors to help him think about it more carefully.

We were actually really, really good first half. Stats say we created 7 chances, Everton 0 first half. But can’t seem to perform more than 45 minutes so second half was pretty dreadful, even if we showed some grit.

Played well in the first half when it was a football contest. Second half, all that Blue Scouse did was hoof it long to Calvert-Lewin and hope to feed off the knock ons which obviously gave them territorial advantage, obviously took our midfield out of the game and obviously made them look like they were in the game but did they score ?

I don't get some of the "played bad" negativity on here. Its like do they really have such a poor understanding of the game that they can't understand what they are watching ? Would love to hear their strategic plan for dealing with the Blue Scouse hoof ball because I sure as hell don't know what we could have done !!! 

Horrendously tough and ugly game out there in a cauldron of an atmosphere and we WON ...... well done lads !
