Absolutely. I think we're 2 midfielders, a no. 6 and no.8, away from being anywhere close to challenging Top 8.

I think to be anywhere near challenging for Europe we need a new CB, DM, CM and possibly a new striker.

I have a feeling Bissouma is our most likely CDM this window.

Kamara is my preference given his specialism in the role and his predisposition to drop between CBs but I think it's likely he will go to a club in european places.

Phillips is just too expensive for what we are getting unless Leeds get relegated - and if they do there will be a lot interest from other clubs.

Regardless YB will hugely upgrade our midfield, there is a question whether he is a natural 6 or 8, which is exactly what held us back with Luiz for so long. I do think Bissouma will still be very successful as a sitter but perhaps is signing opens the door for Iroegbunam to get even more minutes, as it is far less risky to rely on Tim as the 6 if Bissouma is one of the more defensively minded 8's that are next to him.

With Canciedo (YB's touted replacement) now fully hitting the ground running and one year left on Bissouma's contract this seems like the deal that makes most sense

I don’t understand people calling to sign Bissouma as a CDM when it’s not his role. We’ve had years of playing an 8 as a 6, buying a new player to repeat that mistake seems mad to me.

Signing Bissouma and a CDM I’d be very happy to see though.

I think Bissouma in the central role of a flat 3 in midfield is perfect. He has very high defensive stats and passing stats. He can carry the ball forward too. I think a dynamic 3 midfielders is what we want.

Personally I'd like Kamara and Bissouma

People say that he isn't a 6 but if you look at the average positions of the team in more or less every single game he's played in for Brighton this season he has quite literally been playing as a defensive midfielder. He's the deepest player in that area of the pitch and along with the CBs and keeper is generally on average positioned in their own half. That's pretty much as 6/DM as it gets, regardless of any ball carrying ability he also possesses.

Whoscored.com has him playing defensive mid 8 times this season. Central mid 17 times and attacking mid once.

I'm not in the argument about what he is or what he isn't, by the way. I just go away and look at the stats when someone makes a statement.

I think part of the issue there is that Brighton play with a back 3, so when listed out on paper the midfield is then flat when in practice it can be a lot more fluid than that, which Brighton are an example of. SofaScore provides heat maps and average positions on their app, if you go onto pretty much any game he's played for Brighton this season and view the average positions of the game he's been playing as a defensive midfielder. As far as I remember this was the case last season too. These are a couple of examples from just his most recent appearances (would attach more if I was able to) - he wears #8.

Can someone find a heat map. I bet my managers would love a heat map on me it’d never be anywhere near my desk!

No season-long heatmap but this page has his individual matches and where he lined up in them, plus you can go into the match centre of each match and see the heatmap for that match.  Heatmaps are also very dependent on whether you had the ball and what your opponent was doing to your shape as a team.

https://www.sofascore.com/player/yves-bissouma/844842 file too big so cant paste but heatmap is there

It's clear positionally he plays as a more traditional box to box CM but Brighton do play with a flat 2 making it harder to ascertain.

Even if his nominal position is not a sitter, it is clear his skill set is more defensive - his progressive carries are very helpful but I wouldn't be surprised for us to use Bissouma as a 6 in games we expect to dominate more the ball and Bissouma as an 8 with either Tim or a new player as 6 to shore up defensively against the tougher teams.

I think he has the ability to play as a 6 or an 8, basically he's Nakamba and Luiz combined which in itself would be worth his addition to the team.  Weather we sign him or not, we should be looking to add a 6 and 8, even better if one of them can play multiple roles.

Every time I've seen Bissouma play he's always been Brighton's most defensively minded midfielder, sometimes he plays in a midfield two with Lallana, very naive to think that Brighton could get away with playing Lallana and a No.8 in central midfield, even with a three man defence, Bissouma is in there to shield the defence, the defensive side of the game is what he's good at, and if he was to sign for one of the big clubs he's been linked to it would be to play as a DM.

He hasn't got much in the way of attacking qualities, don't expect his passing to be anywhere near as good as Luiz's for example, I'd say it's at least better than Nakamba's, you don't see him give the ball away often and he looks assured enough, but he's one of those midfielders that has to keep it simple, even the Brighton fans who rate him as their best player admit that he's not very good in an attacking sense, his best attacking qualites from what I've seen is that he can drive forward with the ball, and he will win the ball back high up the pitch.

All that said if Gerrard wants to play with a defensively minded midfield, to allow the fullbacks to attack more, or to allow us to give Ramsey a little more freedom to get forward, then he could probably play in our midfield as No.8, in the same way the Liverpool often play No.6s as No.8s in their midfield, but if he was to play as No.8 for us he wouldn't be anywhere near as attack minded as the likes of McGinn and Ramsey when they play there, he would be a more defensive option.

...Not!

Is there space for Bissouma now? Last year on the contract, £25mill surely the fee, he'll have a lot of suitors now that Kamara is off the market...

He’s the one we need. Get him in there sitting alongside Kamara with Ramsey just in front 😍
