I think this might be a first for me. I actually feel sorry for him.

Mike Riley will give him a 9/10.

 

 

Jokes aside, you do have to remember the human. I have no doubt he went out there trying to show he's good enough to do it at the top level, but people are throwing accusations of malice or corruption at him, which is just ridiculous.

He **** up, he was promoted too soon, but honestly, it's a **** hard job, and I have little doubt he was trying his best but just wasn't good enough. I hope we've seen the last of him for now, but he comes back as a better ref in a few years, he's got time on his side.

We were brilliant 1st half but I'm gonna pay Viera some credit for his bold subs and his ability to get that 2nd half performance from his team, it buckled us, that's something to work on of cause and I think Gerrard's subs decisions deserve credit too.

Immense from MV TM SJM and a few others. New manager bounce, maybe, but the early signs are that the players are doing things that Smith struggled to get out of them, movement off the ball, less hero passes and more direct easy option passes were a.plus, also energy levels looked better. Shape was.fune and we were defensively very solid under pressure.very good start Mr Gerrard, now get to work on how we are going to beat Shiteh, it is doable!

Very good team performance and gives us a good platform for the tricky games ahead.

Everyone seemed at ease with the formation and their roles in it. The ball control and movement in the first half was was the best for many moons. The manager also showed he is not afraid to make big calls.

Marvelous my MOTM. Lots of honourable mentions for Young, McGinn, Mings, Target, JJ & Cash. The forwards were not at the best but the good news this squad has plenty of options in that area. 

Palace are a physical/dirty side who were fortunate to finish with 11 but very lucky with todays choice of referee. ( enough said). I know some Villa sides of the last few years who may have been bullied out of this match.

Felt sorry that the defensive hard work did not produce a clean sheet but still a good effort.

Great finish by SJM.

Brighton and Palace were definitely 2 teams which we were the underdog against, so in that respect its really good. I wish it wasnt city up next but we shouldnt be too pessmistic as this is the premier league and anything can happen, and ultimately 6/9 is a great start for gerrard. Only good things to come from this team in the coming months i hope, and will be interesting to see what we do in january. I do think Gerrard will be deploying Sanson soon, as he seems like a dynamic midfielder who can give us that balance between attack and defence whilst also being able to pick a pass. exciting times again and maybe the season isnt a write off after all

OK, I guess my post isn't too popular, but the last 30-35 minutes didn't look as good as the start...we have a lot of work to do given our next three opponents. I wasn't trying to be overly pessimistic, but let's not get carried away with the euphoria either.

Palace fans will justifably think the ref pulling them back for the Nakamba foul with Gallagher and Benteke in on goal was the most egregiously terrible decision of the game (the Luiz red at least being cleared up), but the ref let at least one clear foul go during Villa attacks in either half, the second of which eventually led to poor Emi having to make a save that nearly tore his leg out of the socket. The first one on Bailey was just obviously excessive. I haven't seen the first penalty shout back but thought Watkins probably had a case, the other two and the free kick on the edge were what they were and not really that controversial imo. I wouldn't necessarily have a problem with the mandate to only give penalties where the contact is really decisive and obvious if I had any faith it was going to be applied consistently elsewhere

I screamed IDIOT as Luiz stood up from that challenge, expected the immediate red which duly followed, and then watched in bemusement as it turned out to be nothing and barely a yellow. I did feel for the ref having to watch it back knowing it was wrong on a monitor seemingly embedded in a pile of screaming Palace fans, but also it was hilarious when they popped for the reappearance of the red card as it was confirming the decision instead of overturning it

They otherwise seemed  to wind themselves up unnecessarily over obvious fouls being given when their players were just constantly flying into tackles, while meanwhile Zaha still plugs away like a snidey, aggro automaton powered entirely by resentment that he plays for Crystal Palace. Conor Gallagher was immense.

Leon Bailey obviously has something, but as has been noted is kind of trying too hard to do something himself, over-elaborating and turning into blind alleys when sometimes, with that many men behind the ball, he just needs to find a pass that ensures an attack stays alive. To be fair to Buendia, this is exactly what he did for the goal during his cameo.

Incredible performance from Nakamba (and McGinn's stats for the game are crazy too in addition to the Goal of the Month contender), Ashley Young has really been making himself useful lately, and whatever malaise was affecting the defence appears to have receded for the time being at least. We just need to get some of those creative attacking players integrated and functioning a bit better, though there were notably little groupings of players out there who looked like they actually knew each other today which was pleasing

It'll be interesting to see Gerrard tested against some top half teams. Would be pretty delighted with 2 or 3 points out of that run, but at least we're not looking over our shoulders nervously for a while either way.
