If she has to pay it all as a lump sum then that is what will happen. I want to make sure she actually has to pay it first and what her options are before I just go chucking 2 grand at it

This was their recommendation. I hope you get it resolved.
Stevo985 Posted September 15, 2021 Author VT Supporter Share Posted September 15, 2021 I've told mom to speak with that TaxAid charity. I'm helping her but they're experts so I'd rather she got some advice off them. After some digging we think it might be to do with her receiving part of my dad's pension when he passed away, but because she was still working it should have been declared via a self assessment. She thought the change to her tax code accounted for that but perhaps it didn't. That's all we can think of. Anyway we're resigned to paying the tax owed (if it's legit then she owes it so no real issue there). It's the fine we'd like her to get out of
WhatAboutTheFinish
The only way I can think that they’d let you off the fine is if you can demonstrate that HMRC were aware of her current address whilst they were still sending letters to the old address. Has she had any dealings with them at her new address; self assessment, pension credits…that sort of thing?
Popular Post Stevo985 Posted September 15, 2021 Author VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted September 15, 2021 Spoke to HMRC again today and the guy we got this time was way way more helfpul. Looked back at all her records etc. Turns out it's not £799 each year, it's £104 for each year. But he couldn't understand why she'd owe any tax at all. He THINKS what has happened is that she opened an HMRC account for a self assessment when my dad passed away (because she thought she might have to pay tax on the part of his pension she gets as a result). But because she doesn't have to pay tax, she never filed any sort of tax return, but left the account open. So he reckons they've estimated how much tax she would have owed (Not sure how they've done that) and now she's getting fined because she hasn't paid that. Long story short, he thinks she won't have to pay the fine if she appeals, and that there's a chance she doesn't owe anything at all. But even if she does it's now looking like a couple of hundred uid not a couple of grand
