How many national teams capped a Villa player?

Stephen Ireland too I think.

I don’t know if it’s just the era I grew up in, but it feels right when we have an Irish player in the squad.

No-no. Not while playing for us. He was well out of the Ireland setup by then as a result of numerous factors.

But yeah you're right. I'm probably of the same era and it just feels right.

Ah, I should’ve guessed he’d be out of the set up by then, due to ‘numerous factors’

I wouldn't say that was the biggest problem. There were enough "characters" shall we say in the Ireland setup still at that time. It was more the stories about deceased grandmother/his girlfriend's miscarriage  which led to the mother of all confusions/finger pointing/accusations and in general he didn't feel very welcome in the setup. All in all I think he just didn't want to play for Ireland.

Or Jedinak? Did he play for Oz while with us?

Pretty sure Chris Herd was capped for Oz with us too

As was Shane Lowry, I believe.

Bosnich was the first. Not sure if we are listing them all....

... because outside Bozzy and Jedi, the list isn't that great. 😢

Apparently his girlfriend had a miscarriage during an international break (reportedly during a match that he played). Not wanting anyone to find this out for whatever the reason, he told the manager (Staunton at the time) that his grandmother had died in order to leave the camp before the next game, then it came out that she was in fact still alive and it just snowballed from there with differing reasons why he left the camp (including that his other grandmother had died) before he eventually came out with the truth. Essentially a 21 yr old panicked after his girlfriend had a miscarriage and made a **** up.

Didier Six maybe?

I've done a bit of digging and it seems Didier Six joined us on 1 October 1984, but his final cap for France was on 23 June 1984, therefore he wasn't capped whilst being at Villa. These are the best sources I've found on it.

Ireland had been retired then. No mention of Glenn Whelan 😉

Going through that list posted I;'ve looked at these:-

Balaban - Croatia definitely played whilst at Villa

Carbone - Italy? No, never full international

Cuellar - Spain? Never capped.

Cissokho - France? No. 1 cap before joined Villa.

Ginola - France? No. Last cap was in 1995.

Kubicki - Poland? No. LAst cap in 1991. Joined Villa 1992

Milosevic - Serbia? No. Was still Yugoslavia at the time. Does that still count?

N'Zogbia - France? Don't think so. He has 2 caps the last being in June 2011 and he didn't join Villa until July 2011.

Samba - Congo (not DR Congo). No. Last cap 2013 and didn't join Villa until 2017.

Six - France? Not sure. Last cap was 1984 and was at Villa 1984-5 so could have been but not sure at a quick glance.

Sylla - Guinea?

Sylla - Mali? Yes. Played from 2013 - 2015 for Villa and was called up to Mali during this time.

I've done a map of a "so far" which once I reduce file size I will post.

Did he get capped while playing for villa? I thought MON retired him and Big Mick brought him back in but after he had been released.

Awesome job!

I've been putting together a Google sheet, got a list of countries, added the players I could think of, the dates they were at the club and the date/opponent of their first cap whilst with us.

You can view it in the link below if it helps with your data, anybody else if you question the data or know of somebody to add just let me know:

@cyrusr with regards to Savo, I have him listed under Yugoslavia which obviously no longer exists, but he went on to play for Serbia and Montenegro and then finally Serbia, not sure how that effects your map.

For anybody interested I got my data from a combination of https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/ and https://www.11v11.com/ neither claim their data to be absolute.

Some surprising omissions are Kiraly(Hungary), Six (France), Beye(Senegal), all capped but not whilst playing with us.

Idrissa Gueye was surely capped by Senegal when here
