villalad21
Matt Targett Not even a debate in my view 3
OutByEaster? Posted July 31, 2021 Moderator Share Posted July 31, 2021 It's an interesting one - Targett is number one, but he's not had much of a pre-season yet whereas Young has looked fit, sharp and classy in each of his appearances thus far. I think if Targett plays in the next couple he should be able to assert his positional authority, but it's good to have him under pressure for the shirt.
Xela
If both fully fit - Targett. Without a doubt.
Jonesy7211
Targett, one of our very best last season. Creatively and defensively.

I still rate Martinez as our best player last season. Just the impact he had on the whole back four cannot be ignored. Targett would be 2nd Edited July 31, 2021 by villalad21
Junxs
Matt Targett, we spent good money on him and he was fantastic last season. You don't piss off your better players by replacing them with stop gap players. It's good that he has genuine competition for the first time since he joined us though, think it will push him to become an even better player. Great thing about Ashley Young though is that he will get minutes as he is so versatile, and good to see he still takes fantastic free kicks, don't think we've scored one since Hourihanes been dropped?
Phil Silvers
Matty Cash, Southgate is underrated, right backs rule.

turvontour
Targett. But like that Young can hit a deadball. Hopefully Bailey now also able to do that.
dont_do_it_doug.
Targett was my player of the season, so it’s not even a question. The only caveat is whether he’s fit or not. Does anyone know if he played vs Crewe?

MaVilla
Targett, he's developing, younger and our first choice left back, last years players player of the season, Young is 36 and will play a lot im sure in various positions, but i defo wouldnt be dropping our primary, developing and fairly young LB, for someone with a 1 year contract. Im sure Young will get plenty of game time regardless, probably in multiple positions.

Junxs
@MaVilla Yeah seen these few days ago, quality Just meant its another option with Young, right foot / left foot for best scenario
commander
Targett was outstading last year, I think it would be outrageous if he does't start the season. In my opinion he was very, very unlucky not to be in the Euro squad
HongKongVillan Posted July 31, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted July 31, 2021 Targett as starter. But if we are chasing a game then swapping him for Young may bring something a bit different
brummybloke
Targett injury permitting will start but expect young to feature in a good amount of games as a sub, be it left back or elsewhere. Also expect young to start his badges while with us.
