It's an interesting one - Targett is number one, but he's not had much of a pre-season yet whereas Young has looked fit, sharp and classy in each of his appearances thus far. I think if Targett plays in the next couple he should be able to assert his positional authority, but it's good to have him under pressure for the shirt.

Targett, one of our very best last season. Creatively and defensively.

I still rate Martinez as our best player last season. Just the impact he had on the whole back four cannot be ignored.

Targett would be 2nd

Matt Targett, we spent good money on him and he was fantastic last season. You don't piss off your better players by replacing them with stop gap players.

It's good that he has genuine competition for the first time since he joined us though, think it will push him to become an even better player.

Great thing about Ashley Young though is that he will get minutes as he is so versatile, and good to see he still takes fantastic free kicks, don't think we've scored one since Hourihanes been dropped?

Targett, he's developing, younger and our first choice left back, last years players player of the season, Young is 36 and will play a lot im sure in various positions, but i defo wouldnt be dropping our primary, developing and fairly young LB, for someone with a 1 year contract.

Im sure Young will get plenty of game time regardless, probably in multiple positions.
