U23 Development League 2021/2022

From what I've seen of our U23s this season there seems to be a big difference in our performances between when Aaron Ramsey plays and when he doesn't play or when he has a good game or a quiet game. We seem to be able to control games much better when he's playing, and he's a big miss when he's not, as we don't have much in the way of alternative attacking midfielders, that can dominate the game in that area of the pitch, Thorndike looks good at times but seems to go in and out of games so doesn't have the same affect.

Just now, Phil Silvers said:

13 in 13 now for Archer.

Archer really needs a loan out imo to as high a level as possible, he's way too good for u23s and not quite in a position to reasonably challenge for a first team starting slot, would be bad for him to just sit on the bench for the next 6 months.

Would be interested to see how he does in the Champ or League 1 with his recent scoring streak etc.

Could be, he's making prem squads, had minutes, could be we have one eye on covid at the mo so maybe SG wants them all available just in case.

Are the playing the first team formation? Looks like we might be.

Kesler will cause some serious damage at this level with that much freedom. He causes some pretty nasty damage regardless.

I think automatic promotion has been out of the question for a while now, play-offs still a possibility, but given we've only won one game in the last two months, or two in the last three, if we're to have any chance of even making them in the first place we will have to improve fast.

Whilst we will be targetting promotion, I don't think it's seen as the be all and end all, as I don't think there's much difference in quality between the two leagues, in fact some teams in the lower division will have better academies than some teams in the division above, ourselves and Albion provide much more internationals at youth level for example than most other teams, it's also distorted by some teams concentrating on individual development over team results, also some teams playing much younger players.

A sign that we're more interested in individual development rather than the team getting promoted, is the fact we've let Aaron Ramsey and Caleb Chukwuemeka both go out on loan, and we will probably let some of the others go out as well, so second half of the season could be a bigger struggel in terms of results.

If Barry and Brad Young go back out on loan as has been suggested, then for second half of the season we're going to be relying on the likes of Abldeen-Goodridge, and U18 forwards like Sewell, Shakpoke, Moore, and Lutz. Archer might be still around, but as third choice first team striker probably won't be availabe for many U23 games, especially Friday fixtures.

Friday 14th
19:00 sha(14->14)          1-1 Stoke City(4->4)
19:00 Notts Forest(13->12) 3-2 Norwich City(2->3)
19:00 Reading(12->13)      1-4 Newcastle United(7->5)

Sunday 16th
12:00 Middlesbrough(11->11) 3-2 Sunderland(8->9)

Monday 17th
19:00 Southampton(10->8) 2-1 Fulham(1->1)
19:00 West Brom(2->2)    2-1 Aston Villa(5->7)
19:00 Wolves(9->10)      1-1 Burnley(6->6)

A rare defeat for Fulham as we slip to 7th in the table. Newcastle and Burnley jump above us.

Our game(s) in hand mean we're still somehow not cut adrift. Although our form and team selections mean our games in hand mean very little at the moment.

It was a relatively old team who lost to West Brom, averaging 18.75 years of age. The 3rd oldest side we've featured this season, although it's effectively the 2nd oldest given that the side who faced the noses (19.66) had a returning Trezeguet (27) in it. Even the other team, the home side versus Sunderland (18.96) had Keinan Davis (23) in it. So you could even say this is the oldest team this season not artificially bumped up by a senior player.

Next up in our dwindling season is a home tie versus Reading this Monday at 7pm.

We drew 2-2 down at their place back at the start of November with goals from Abldeen-Goodridge & Thorndike.

Reading have lost their last 5 in all competitions, 3 in the league.
