skarroki Posted July 7, 2021 Share Posted July 7, 2021 I live with a Leicester fan and a Man City fan and the discussion all season has been which of Foden, Maddison or Grealish do you play? And could you play all 3 behind Kane. We went into the Tournament with Maddison not even in the 33 and we've seen Saka, Sancho, Rashford, Sterling and Mount all get minutes and Lingard unlucky to miss out. You can't pick all of them but you do have to pick from a bunch of average keepers and shaky, slow centre backs along with some very pedestrian midfielders (as good as they might be). Southgate seems to be maligned by a minority still for not picking a 3-1-6 formation and just throwing on everyone's favourite exciting talent all at once. We needed to be tight at the back to protect the defence and solidify the middle. I'm sure if we had Pogba and Kante to choose from instead we'd be a bit more attacking. He's been dealt a top heavy hand and has been tasked with getting this team winning and he's done it. But in hindsight, at the time Southgate had a choice to make as Denmark threw a load of attackers on. He made that decision and I'm sure it'll have played on his mind. At the time, I would have taken Kane off, because as Denmark inevitably went gung-ho, Sterling up front would have put the shits up them. Sterling had a great game, was direct, was playing without fear (even though he lost if a few times), he made Denmark nervous. Kane kept dropping deep and really should have had 2 tap ins (one from jack, the other when it dribbled across the box and Harry was on the edge of the 18 yard box..). He looked knackered a.d didn't affect the game much, but Southgate was never gonna take his captain off. Foden was just the lucky one I guess. No biggy. Furthest we've ever got, and as someone who remembers 96 vividly, despite not really loving England much over the last few decades, I can definitely get behind this squad. I'm chuffed. I can't wait to see us play Italy (usually my favourite national team) and hopefully beat them. Both teams wil give their all and it's a proper classic feel to me. I'm sure Jack will be fine, he's a big boy, you don't have to wipe his arse and hold his hanky when he blows his nose - he'll be buzzing to potentially play in a final, we should get behind him and the team (of you're English), it doesn't get much better than this!! 12 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Also if you want to look on positives for Villa one more is Jack Grealish just got potential glimpse of his future at a Man City or other jam packed team of stars......... from indispensable at Villa to bench option. At the time it seemed odd but we saw the game out so it was justified. At least he brought jack on tonight. Teams that have won tournaments in recent year are solid and pragmatic not Kevin Keegan throw everyone up front formations. International football can be, well, frankly a bit dull. If dull gets England to win a major tournament then so be it. I would take a Portugal 2016 ahead of a Brazil 1982. I was thinking the exact same thing... I was also thinking, Jack doesn't get played in anywhere near the times he does for Villa, He is an " On the ball" man, thats where the benefit lies......I think he finds it alien, playing without the ball for longer periods than he does for us. as one example...Phillips even apologised to Jack, when he skyed a shot over, when Jack was in a better position.....it will get better, when Jack is more established and demands the ball more. If it happened at the other end to knock England out, the reaction would be apoplectic in the stands, press etc. Sterling's performance, one of the greatest all time in an England shirt? Commiserations to the Danes. Schmeichel managed to come up with a couple of fantastic saves. What an amazing achievement in the circumstances. Should be proud of the amazing effort your squad has put in over the Euros. Ultimately though, it's the best two teams of the tournament, in the Final. Hopefully it lives up to the build up.
