So why would ESR be demanding 80k when Saka who is above him in the pecking order is on 30k?

Because Willian who is below him is on £300k.

Aubameyang who had much less of a positive effect on Arsenal's season is on £300k.

Ben White, good young defender joining from Brighton is being put on £80k at least.

Their squad is a mess of inflated wages.

An example of how not to build a club.

And because other clubs (ie, us) are probably willing to give him very good wages to make a move here. He's got leverage in multiple areas really.

Yep, they’ve got some interesting choices to make:

A - pay ESR the big bucks so he signs a new contract, then give Saka a new deal too or risk really upsetting him.

B - refuse to raise his salary, no new contract and lose him for a reduced fee next summer

C - sell him this summer for the best price they can get

That’s without the dynamics of playing time if they land Aouar from Lyon, who isn’t coming to sit on the bench behind ESR.

They're probably wrestling with A at the moment, but with the overall cost of their rebuild (already spent 80 million, plus targeting Aouar, Max Aarons and Locatelli) they’ll need players sales eventually to recoup some funds.

Really wouldn’t be surprised if they settle on option C before the end of the window, but it could take a while.

I think that will be the clincher either way. If they land Aouar, the promise of guaranteed football here on good wages may be too hard for ESR to resist.

The contract yet to be signed (allegedly) and the lack of solid news from Arsenal about this makes it seem like they are hedging their bets, hoping to land Aouar but falling back on ESR should they fail.

He's an Arsenal lad - much like a certain Martinez was - but at least he knows he is wanted here.

It becomes almost impossible to move players once a club has put them on stupid money that most other club can't afford

Perhaps we sign Bailey and so Arsenal assume we are no longer in for ESR, therefore they then lowball the lad on his new contract, thinking he’ll have to take it. We then zoom in and scoop him up and give the kid a real shot at glory playing alongside Jack his hero. Job done!
