James Ward-Prowse

England player, solid & dependable, great set-piece taker which we are poor at and have more opportunities than most to take advantage from. But you’d hope for someone a little more dynamic, but depending on price he seems a quality addition to the squad.

I thought JWP was a box to box player. Is he a DM?

Yeah just reading up on him and they refer to him as a DM or deep lying midfield player.  I didnt know that.

to be fair Norwich reporters didnt say we'd get Buendia either...I'm not convinced but this Villa team know how to get things done so it certainly wouldnt surprise me

Did they? Not familiar. Links?

Southampton do seem to have ground to a bit of a halt.  I think Hassenhuttl is a very good manager but he can't really take them much further than they are without spending a lot so if he decides to go somewhere else (maybe Spurs?) then I could see Ward-Prowse looking elsewhere too.  I don't think cost would be a problem for us anyway.

Southampton are a selling club and have been for years, its far from inconceivable that they would sell JWP, he’s one of their two primary assets along with Ings.

Whether he would come here is debatable and it would almost certainly cost more than £35M.

From what I’ve seen of him he’s Hourihane on steroids.

yeah via twitter, i will try and find the main dude whose a proper reporter with close connection with Norwich.  He kind of only gave Arsenal a chance of signing, felt very dismissive of us.  Will try and find a tweet or his name

edit 1: I knew it was one of two.  It isnt Michael Bailey who has been on holiday for a week so only comment was when it was done and he actually is fairly focused on facts than speculation (unusual for a journalist).  It was the other guy but I'm rubbish at filtering out other garbage on Twitter but will have a further look

I think he’s a number 8, so more box to box than anything else. But I’m by no means an expert.

That was my impression, but transfermarkt said different.

Thing is I can see us splashing out on a quality DM, but for the box-to-box position we got Luiz, McGinn, Sanson and Ramsey + Chuk. I just think we have more pressing needs than more comp. there.

Apart from his free kicks, is he any better than our existing midfielders and where would he fit in?

McGinn, Sanson

Luiz, Nakamba

Ramsey? Chukwumeuka?

Hourihane should be outgoing…

He’s not the imposing DM we apparently need and we have enough box to box MFs.

Would someone be sold to make room  in the squad?

Highly valued by So’ton, seemingly has an attachment/affinity to the club (Le Tiss loves him too), he would cost a huge fee and would it really be worth it?

Beyond the free kicks, what does he offer that we don’t already have? Doesn’t strike me as much of an upgrade…

There’s got to be better value and higher quality out there… or are we replacing someone?

I think he is a very smart player, reads the game well, brilliant dead ball specialist, genius at throw ins and being intelligent at game management he can adapt to playing a variety of roles in different formations.

And Ings contact is up? So they don’t have many other assets.

That's all well and good but clubs don't usually sell players they've just tied down for 5 years and smart operating clubs, like us, don't approach players recently tied down to long term contracts.

I bet the guy who wrote puff piece doesn't even know JWP signed 5 year contract recently and just heard Grealish comment about set pieces which is the bulk of the puff piece.

Can’t see this one happening. He’s their captain, an England international, one of their best players, and would cost so much more than his value to bring in.

Someone like Bissouma I could see coming in, but not Ward-Prowse. The uproar amongst their fans would be horrific for the Southampton board.

I honestly feel bad for Soton fans. They are a well run club  and have been for years but they always lose their best players to bigger clubs.
