Its why I never thought we were in for Mcneil or Wilson from last year. Just not how we go about our business. I think you might argue that's exactly how we go about our business considering we paid big fees for Cash, Targett, Watkins, Konsa etc. I agree that we scouted abroad before, with the likes of Engels, Nakamba, Wesley, but I think the club have quickly realised that when investing such large sums of money on players, you need to be safe in the knowledge that they'll perform. I think you'll see a strategy now where we spend big on 1/2 players each summer, probably from the PL/Premier League, and then bring in a couple of 10-20m pound players that we've scouted using data science or whatever McKenzie and his band of merry men do. I think it's quite clear what the long term vision for the club is. NSWE will have known, when purchasing the club, that they had to spend big for the first 5/6 years in order to get Villa challenging for Europe. However, after that initial HUGE investment, they will have challenged Purslow and whoever the manager is, on only spending big on 1 or 2 players each summer with the instruction being that the squad and first team will be supplemented by the players we are bringing through. We're not spending 6 figure sums on 16yr olds, hoovering up all the best young talent across the country to win the FA youth cup every year. They want to develop the next Grealish, the next Cahill, and they want one to breakthrough every other year rather than one every decade. Back onto JWP, it might be that we aren't in for him, but, if we are, he'll be desperate to join. Not because Saints are a bad club or anything like that, but because he'll be told what we're doing, where we're going and he'll be handsomely remunerated for his services. 2

It's amazing 1 guy with no transfer background can write an article that on face of reading says JWP would be good for Villa and no usual suspect backs it up, Percy, Romano, etc and people start creating new Villa teams based on this single source. Cash, Targett, Watkins and Konsa were not established starters in the PL, that's the big difference. None of them were overpriced too, if you consider the fact that we could now sell all of them for a considerable profit. They were all risky investments too, not really the safe investment that you would get from someone like Ward-Prowse. As people have said before, we get it, you have posted it at least 20 times, just move on and let others speculate? I’d agree that they weren’t established in the PL but their risk was reasonably low given that they were home based players. JWP is riskier in respect to the amount of money involved but considerably less risky with regards to him performing to a high level. I think we’ve moved up a level recruitment wise. With the continued growth of the academy we’re developing our own low risk players instead of buying them a few years later.
