Most of our 15 clean sheets were without Nakamba.  Sometimes you just have games like that.

If we are playing with 2 8's and a 6 and those 8's are decent defensively (McGinn and Luiz for example), then JWP as the 6 is fine. If you're playing a 6, 8, and 10 you need a Nakamba type (that's better on the ball ideally).

Yeah but stats shows Emi was overworked last season so the back 4 is clearly not getting good enough protection

This would be a statement signing - very much a power play to strengthen us, weaken a rival team and assert dominance over them, and show other players that we mean business.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if we went for it. Signing him is another matter.

Compare the stats, JWP trumps McGinn. His WhoScored rating is also higher.

JWP scores more goals gets more assists and ultimately he keeps the ball way better than McGinn.

Obvious upgrade.

Now whether there is any truth in it?

How many goals and assists does he get from open play?

Depends on what teams you're comparing us to! If you're comparing our shots against stats with possession based teams then it will always be unfavourable, as we primarily played a counter style which means conceding more territory to invite teams onto us, which means more openings for long shots, as more time is spent defending in our defensive third.

McGinn more interceptions, blocks, successful dribbles, drawing fouls etc etc but sure

That is a ridiculous stat. Whether it’s him or someone else we really could do with a free kick expert given that Jack is fouled 100 times per game.

Most of his assists were set pieces also. He's not like McGinn. In open play he is more defensive. A cross between a ball winner, spoiler (good at the dirty spoiling tactics), and distributor. Outside of set pieces you won't notice him much unless you're purposely looking out for him. You play this guy behind McGinn and Luiz in a 3, or alongside one of those two in a 2.

For me this link is for real, but the deal is a tough one to make.

Definitely a perfect fit for Smith and the club. Leader, set piece specialist, combative, excellent presser, good passer.

Southampton will want 40 to 50 million pounds for him even if he puts in a transfer request. Southampton however are a selling club, they have kept afloat by selling their best players for big money so a deal can be made, it's all about whether we are willing to spend the money.

It’d be interesting to see how many free kicks Southampton were awarded last season compared to Villa. JWP scored 5 from their total, I would imagine our total is significantly higher and that he’d have the opportunity to probably double his free kick attempts at Villa.

Does that matter? We’re boosting our assists and goals with Buendia.

If you are talking goals, with Grealish being the most fouled player in the league, and JWP to finish them off we’re adding at least 10-13 goals to the team per season, maybe more. Plus if defenders realise this and avoid fouling Jack, it just gives him license to rip defences apart. Either way it would add significant firepower to our forward line.
