If anyone wants to have a dig at me for this, name me a Chinese owner involved in football that has the faintest idea what it's all about. They're worse than the yanks, completely oblivious to what makes this sport work.

I agree although I’d say Wolves are in quite a decent position now considering where they were 3-4 years ago and whilst Inter may go downhill now, they at least won the league.

Is that why Nuno jumped ship?

It’s all relative. Wolves were a shit championship club for years. Ain’t like he jumped ship after the Chinese owners came on board.

I thought there was talk of him wanting to be closer to home but by that he meant London

I think JWP is one of those Mr Consistent type players who a club's own fans rate, but opposition fans see as a bit mediocre. Gareth Barry was always the same when he was at Villa.

I'd be happy to overpay slightly for him, because I think he would hit the ground running and help us really kick on immediately. If we overpay by £5m or £10m that's nothing in the grand scheme of things - certainly not enough to cause us any financial problems, or limit our ability to buy players in the future.

Barry is probably a good example, although I don’t think he’s in the same class as Barry. If I thought he was I wouldn’t care what we paid. Barry’s range of passing and vision was brilliant.  A Gareth Barry is our team now and we would be challenging top 6 imo.

I know a Chinese owned club where you can get some banging cheesy chips for just £4

sadly, they are players who are not eye candy......Their worth is not always so easily identifiable...they can be a bit mundane, but they give "control" to a game.

They are players, players......not necessarily fan players......which is undertandable why they divide opinion.

I am not embarrased to say as a young supporter, it took me time to appreciate the role.

If we sign him I hope you are correct. At the moment, I see nothing. more in JWP than a dead ball specialist. I am not knocking the role of a dead ball specialist but I would be nervous he wouldn't add to our football. I suppose I haven't seen enough of him play other that the odd game against us and the highlights on MOTD / Sky and highlights of JWP tend to be free kicks

If it was me Pete....I would want a player who was taller for aerial balls, athletic for mobility, power and ball control to help them stay ON the ball.

Ndidi, Bissouma is the type for me.....maybe Anguissa or Doucoure, but haven't studied them enough.

I think such a player would have a huge impact on our ambitions and would get the flair players on their way, to do what they do best.....if talent keeps coming back to find the ball, their talent is negated.

You can have the best "bricklayer" in the world, but without an equivalent "Hod Carrier"......The talent is lost.

ps without sounding arrogant, I have never been so sure about something....we are lacking here.

We’ve been shit at set pieces for donkeys years.

Changes us completely.

SIGN HIM UP

Can't sign a player just on needing goals from set pieces, if that's all this is boiling to with JWP I'd rather the skip button being pressed lol.

There is much of what we need from a CM, more so than just set pieces. I would rather us have a more complete player out there for CM that can tear it up in all directions and be more consistent at his role. While I would like set pieces to become a thing again, it's not something you can just dig up and make happen, you either buy it in a player or you try and raise it in a player in your academy. This game has changed however and the days of sticking one player on (I'll use Hourihane as an example) with okay set pieces has flown on by. I feel if we're going to spend 40 plus mill on a CM, then we may as well start looking at spending a good bit of coin, break our record Fee again if need be. That would be the center of our spine where that player has to be a very talented individual capable of doing a variety of everything.

Maybe the new set piece coach can unearth a player we already have that already has the ability to make the shots count in set pieces. It may very well be that there's a Technique change required in order for this player amongst us to be set loose, who knows.

I want us to go for someone because we need an upgrade in midfield and that Mcginn has to step up to combat that signing because new signing is better. I hope any new signing we bring into the midfield knows there offense and defence game well. Because we are lighter than some teams in the central area due to have wingers, our midfielders do have extra work load once our midfield is targeted more throughout games. I heard talk of some wanting a big lad in midfield who more of a physical fit presence as some of the more successful teams utilise such players but we do not and if that's the case then I like this idea as much as set pieces.

We already have two EX Southampton players at Villa and as I said last night, I am not a fan of becoming a 2.0 of a club. I do believe that would happen if you take on to many from a single club as your bout to take on traits and bad habits along the way.

Yeah, I agree with that. I feel for the money that is suggested for JWP (anywhere from 40m to 70m) we should be able to get a better player, maybe a couple of years younger that could help bring Villa to the next level. I feel JWP would be a nice addition and would score some goals but we would want rid of him in a few years. We have that type of purchase with Ings and I am happy we bought Ings but he will not be here in a few years.

He would be one of our best:

-passers (short and long)

-long range hitters (also from open play)

-pressers

-defensive stoppers

-leaders

I have read a lot of people suggest the same as you are saying. I just haven't seen it myself. Hopefully, that is just a reflection on my (in)ability to judge a player from some highlights and if we do sign him he turns out to be the player so many Villa fans want us to buy
