Just because we've gone in for him again doesn't mean we are getting him. I personally can't see a window where Southampton sell 3 of their best players.

Same. But they need a rebuild and are massively short of money so who knows. More likely if we pay a large amount upfront.

And now we have that new coach that trains dead ball situations so they should get better.

:D I'd suspect that the likes of Man U, Inter and Leverkusen might have had this covered pretty thoroughly as well.

That new coaches job becomes so much easier with a player like JWP in the squad. This guy will have the lowdown on who the best dead ball specialist in the world are and he may even influence the decision to bring him in.

If he can improve Young and Bailey then it might be better to spend the money on that Norwich MF ( Todd Cantwell,I think )

God I'm getting excited if this happens.

I would be happy going into the season with this being our final signing. (I also wouldn't turn down a new LW).

                           Ings/Watkins

New/AEG   Buendia/Carney     Bailey/Traore

          McGinn/Sanson.      JWP/Luiz

Targett/Young Mings/Hause Konsa/Axel Cash/Fred

No real drop off in talent in any position except GK.

I can't imagine Ward-Prowse would want to stay under the current owners and the fact his best mate has joined the Villa.

Hopefully he signs soon.

If anything, I reckon it's the Chinese needing to liquidate everything, which would swing it.

However latest reports I read today, said this is unlikely, so wondering where the renewed optimism has come from?

He will probably want to leave, them allowing it is another thing.

Can see your point but I think we have plans to CChuk this season, I think he will be fast tracked into the team and so I think TC may hinder that.

I don't mind TC myself, always thought he looks useful and busy.

Southampton have demonstrated to JWP that they cannot afford to improve without selling their best players, and taking a chance on a cheaper replacement system which may or may not pay off in the next two/three years.

Does he settle for the prospect of increasing obscurity while playing out the key years of his career in the soulless pursuit of Premier survival, or does he say to his owners that now is the time for him to go to a progressive club that will highlight his abilities?

They can use the inflated transfer fee to broaden their rebuild. They must have scouted targets for this eventuality.

I see posters discussing JWP's truly excellent dead ball kicking, but what excites me most is his all round game. He's the player we've been missing for many seasons.

Amen to that. A very good summary of where Southampton and the player are at.

He is definitely more of a Dean Smith style player than a specialist CDM would be. He's liked having technicians with high work rate in midfield at every club he's managed. That coupled with his free kicks is why he's probably the number one target ahead of a Sarr or Doucoure style signing.

Exactly.

And that isn't a dig at Southampton as a club or at its fans. They may well do this to us in a few years time. This is just a sign of the times. At present, they have owners that aren't willing to invest into the club and have issues getting money out of China. They're happy to just stay in the league and a player as good as JWP (who I don't think is a world beater by any stretch) needs to decide whether, like you say, he wants to play out the best years of his career in a side who's only ambition is to perform well enough to receive the TV money every year or move on.

In a perfect world, you'd like to think JWP would stay at Southampton as that's the club that have made him into the player he is today. Without Southampton, JPW might be flipping burgers at Mcdonalds right about now. But that isn't the way it goes, as we found out so painfully with Grealish. Players generally want to play at clubs that match their ambition and right now, I think Villa are a project that JWP may look at and think, 'I want to be a part of this with my mate Danny and Matt'.

Transfers/Loyalty/Agents/Wages. It's all one big melting pot of greed and ambition. You've just got to hope you have owners who are ambitious as ours.

JWP is at a similar age to Grealish and needs to decide if he is happy with his hometown club and be a legend there, or take the plunge and go to a more ambitious club with better players.

I think we know what usually happens next.

No idea what you're referring to mate...
