I was always of the opinion that Sterling has to earn that place and on today's game he has earned it - Jack has to wait - but that in itself is only a good thing, he will be desperate to take his chance when it comes - can easily see him doing great things later on

I think Sterling is part of Southgates "senior squad members", possibly a bit of a class system in camp.

Senior squad being

Kane Maguire Henderson walker trippier Rashford Sterling and Pockford. Southgate wants these on every game unless injured.

I can understand that - possibly explains his reluctance with Jack - but get the feeling that Jack will disrupt things as soon as he is given a chance. Must be absolutely biting to get on the field and shake things up.

Unleash the beast😄

If you add Mount to the above that only really leaves 2 spots, I'd say he favours Stones, so 1 spot really and thats probably Rice by default.

Hard to break in to with a scared spineless unadventurous manager.

Have to say - he could and should have brought jack on instead of Calvert Lewin - that he didn't reminded me of the grudge he may have against him.

Same here and remember that the fans were singing after Jack too, he could at least have let them see him for 10 minutes. He's been MOTM every game he's played too, bizarre.

The thing with England and Grealish is that this result is largely irrelevant. For four reasons:

1) Southgate isn't a good manager

2) You will struggle at some point

3) When point 2 happens English tabloids will hammer Southgate to use Grealish, and he will buckle. Just like he did before when he tried to ignore him.

4) When Grealish gets the chance he will be motm again, cause that's just what he does. Thus he will be cemented in the line-up for the rest of the tournament.

Personally I thought it was a mediocre performance. Good first 20 mins then Modric started to dictate the game. After the break I expected England to step it up, which they failed to do apart from the Phillips excellent run to set up Sterling. The subs were poor but not unexpected, and England won which is all that matters in a group stage. Phillips was my MOTM, Mings look solid, but we know he is, and the three points goes a long way to our qualification. Was it a statement of intent performance? Not for me. I was hoping for more, but it was a win, and with the heat, the home pressure and the manager I suppose that is all we can expect.

Fans were on form.

boo’d the national anthem of Croatia

boo’d the knee

boo’d when Croatia had any possession in the first part of the game.

As if our standing in the world is not bad enough already.

Just the look of them in general, were more than a few absolutely smashed, every time the camera showed the crowd there was a topless overweight guy working on his sunburn and in the build up to this game the knock off stone island manufacturers must have been working doubles

It wasn't everyone but there was a lot of stereotypical English 20 to 40 white men in that crowd being everything that the world thinks that we are

They’ll be jumping all over ambulance cars again if we get to the knockout rounds.

Did Croatia actually create a serious chance today? I was flicking between the game and French Open tennis but didn't seem they had much in final third despite English backline being a predicted disaster zone.

It's a very solid win for England that. Of course we'd all love Jack to start but him being on the fringes keeps him with us for next season 100% so not too bothered.

Imagine if he came in and peaked and won player of the tournament. The press would be banging on every single day of summer as to why best player at euros is only playing for 11th best team in England and you'd know what would happen eventually.

He'll start at least one game before this tournament is out, I'd start him v Scotland as that's a good one to make impact on.

Nope, they were really flat and toothless, didn't create a chance or any pressure or ever look like scoring

England could have had a couple, there were maybe 3 or 4 bits of quality in the whole game, 1 of them was a throw in...

Jack will play in a "unlock defences" specialist role I think so expecting Scotland to put everyone behind the ball and jack to be considered the man to beat them

There was one possible moment but Perisic ran into the brick wall I mean Tyrone Mings.
