40 Years Ago - Today

I was a year older doing exactly the same thing. The feeling of despair at halftime, that we’d come so far and got so close only to just fall short is still vivid.

But we didn’t fall short and we became the Champions of England. And we did it the right way, on the pitch through hard work and determination not because we had more money than anyone else or because we felt entitled to it.

Perhaps we’re not the biggest club, or the richest club or the most successful club but we are still a unique and extraordinary football club that can break your heart and lift you to the greatest of highs. Sometimes on the same afternoon, just like they did 40 years ago today. Thank you for choosing me Villa, always in my heart.

I was a complacent at the time - we had a great manager, great scouting and youth team. I never believed that championship in 80/81 - would be a once a lifetime.  We looked set to be challenging year in year out for major honours.

Wow. I was probably eating rusks and cacking in my pants, but if I’d have known I would have been there.

We were all cracking our pants at halftime!

I was there standing in the clock end or the south bank whatever it was called. The game it self was an anti-climax.  We didn't turn up but the cheers from the fans listening to their pocket radios told us the Middlesborough were beating Ipswich. I wasn't one of those that ran on the pitch at the end

Same as PaulC, i was in the Clock End.One of the overriding memories of that day was the amount of supporters with radios, and the constant eruptions of euphoria when news come through about our Bozo scoring against Ipswich.

Quite a bit of trouble after the game, and saw a few coaches with their windows put through, but you just felt it was the start of something, and indeed it was.

I was.

Got escorted off the pitch by a couple of bobbies who hadn't took kindly to me getting some Highbury turf !!!

It should have been the start of a dynasty...bit of penny pinching and the return of Doug threw away all the good years leading up to 80/81.

Sure we the European Cup a year later - and things ticked over for a couple of seasons . But a golden opportunity to join the elite was gone.

I was one, and my parents weren’t really into football. But I reckon I must have seen some of the game and/or celebrations on the news, which clearly made an unconscious imprint on my psyche.

I remember an interview with Deadly by Tom Ross on the radio in the 90s, and he was quite proud of the fact that when he took over, 83?, we was £1m in debt, and he cleared it. The point that we had won the League and the Euro Cup in that period seemed irrelevant.

Yes we missed a massive opportunity hippo.

i was 20 years old, enjoying players like Barry, Merson, Boateng, Alpay, Southgate, Wright, Ginola, Dublin etc playing for the Villa.

Was super upset that in the 00/01 season we finished 8th, after only winning 3 of the last 12 games (W 3, D 7, L 2)

ironically, 00/01 was the final season of us doing the top 6 / top 10 pushes, we went in to slow decline after the 00/01 season, culminating in our relegation in 15/16!!

edit: thought the title was "20 years ago"...lol...oops.

I was 29, at Highbury watching us lose to Arsenal but win the league.

I was living in London and not able to attend home matches regularly so I had to go in with the Arsenal fans. It was quite a poor performance from Villa and I was starting to fear the worst but suddenly the massive contingent of Villa fans erupted and started celebrating so I knew the Ipswich game must have been going our way. Total mayhem at the end when the Villa fans invaded the pitch. I swiftly headed for the tube to get back to safety.

The day was a bit of a let-down really but it was the end of a truly great season that I will never forget.

Although in those less global days I was probably as pleased that we had achieved almost a clean sweep against SHA, Coventry, Baggies and Wolves, all of whom were in Division 1 then. We beat them all except West Brom away where we drew.

I was 24, on the Clock End and I was one of the ones with a radio. All the action was happening at Boro and those cheers when Bosko Jankovic sealed our title win were so joyful. Defeat but ultimate victory, what a day!
