There's something very enjoyable about a good set piece routine though, England had a few the last World Cup that were pretty good.

I agree, maybe I am a bit old school.

One of my favourite ever goals at Villa Park was Laursen's header versus Ajax.

The sense of excitement was so palpable that night, it felt that anything was possible.

Sadly that was almost as good as it got under MON.

It would be great to have some European nights back under the lights.

Hello everyone, new poster here. I've thought this for a while. We have the most fouled player in the league playing for us, yet fail to capitalise on it as much as we should.  Since Conor hasn't been a regular, there's nobody I get exited about taking a free kick. We've got some decent crossers of the ball, and players we know can hit screamers from distance every now and again (although not recently). You'd think with some of the attacking quality we have, there'd be someone who can grab the ball in those situations, and you'd know there was something special about to happen.

Welcome. Yes this is an issue. Its not just that Jack wins lots of free kicks, it now also seems that the rest of the team are looking to win free kicks, rather than advance with the ball into dangerous areas. Therefore our delivery has to be consistently better than it is currently, or we are just turning it over to the opposition.

Its interesting what you say about Hourihane and direct free kicks. We had a free kick just outside the box against either Arsenal or West Ham, and Traore, Grealish, Barkley and Luiz all stood over it to begin with. The commentator said something along the lines of having really good options to take this. And I thought to myself, have any of these players ever scored a free kick?

I found one free kick goal scored for Barkley and Traore each but both happened a long time ago.

As far as I can tell, Grealish and Luiz have never scored directly from a free kick at a senior level.

Yes possibly Sanson.

I would have thought with corners though you dont need to be overly good at them per se. Like I cant name the other 19 corner specialists of the other teams in the league. But I would have thought one player taking all or most corners would increase accuracy, and understanding of those attacking the corners. Maybe just reading too much in to it. Maybe it doesnt matter who takes them.

Ashley Westwood... I said that jokingly, then remembered he actually had an assist against us from a corner 🤐

We had a free kick about 30 yards out which someone, I think Sanson, just dinked up in the air, and nothing came of it.

From the position of that free kick, most teams are shooting. Spurs didnt even bother with a wall against us.

Targett put in a good free kick from the left. Apart from that our set pieces were shocking yet again again.

Come on lads. These are the absolute basics of football and one of the easiest things to get right.

How the f*ck are we this bad at set pieces (and have been for the last 10 years or so)?

Our effing throw ins are woeful too. Why can't we just throw the bastard to the nearest team mate. Instead we have to get a full set up going and line everyone up to throw to the other bastards we're playing against.

it looks like they are playing kick about when we have set pieces -- they always want to take them quickly and not actually send the ball into the box. Targett did have some pretty good free kicks today though

Konsa scored a couple think Hause and Mings as well

We are 5th on set piece goals in the Premier League

That's interesting and surprising.

Was the last direct free kick Hourihane v Newcastle in 2019?

Should run a sweepstake on our next direct free kick scorer.

Think most of them are second phase though. For example the traore goal v Newcastle came from a corner but only one I can remember of corner taker crossing and someone heading in was konsa v Sheffield United first game.
