The Midfield Three

I agree I think we don't want to set up with luxury players in midfield like we had with Barkley. Jack does his high pressing, Watkins obviously does as will Buendia. If we have a McGinn, Sanson, Luiz or new signing in the midfield 3 they will keep the press on when they don't have the ball. I'm sure this is how we will play most of our games next season when players are fit and in form.

IF we add JWP to that line up it’s very very strong.

As it stands now, I fully anticipate us to line up like this for most of the upcoming season, unless we sign another "Number 10" this summer.

McGinn - Douglas Luiz - Sanson

Buendia - Watkins - Grealish

This is how I want us to start the season. Traore El Ghazi J Ramsey Nakamba Wesley Trezeguet Chukwuemeka and Philogene -Bidace and Barry still provide decent depth

I'm with you on this but I also think they'll be games where we use 4-2-3-1 as well, maybe against some of the weaker teams where Jack or Emi could play as the number 10 and then Traore or AEG come in on either the right or left  to give us more of a goal threat.

Nice to have some good options!

This is going to be an interesting thread if we don’t sign any new midfielders for next season. We have some decent players but none of them are top half premier league yet! As many have said we need pace, power and physicality. The second Stoke goal today was a classic example of one of the key reasons that Emi had to make so many saves last season. Parting of the Red Sea!

It’s the weakest area of the side and it needs fixing before the start of the season. Need two new players in there.

We're not throwing in 2 brand new players in central mid. It will be Nakamba McGinn in a 4231 most likely

But we should...

Most teams don't introduce new CM pairing just before new season. It's madness. What's so bad about Nakamba? Was excellent end of last season against Spurs and Chelsea. Don't get the McGinn out brigade either.

Not out but mcginn shouldn't be aiming to start 38 games, mixture of he's not good enough and he's definitley not fit enough for it

If you take sanson as one of thr new, or even chuk but we'd still need someone of better quality in there, it's a real weakness in the squad both attacking and defending, a midfield 3 of Nakamba, Luiz and McGinn isn't good enough

We get waltzed through the middle too often. I don't want McGinn out, just not starting. He slows everything down too often, he's not very mobile, isn't really a defensive or attacking specialist. He's just... alright.

Nakamba is not good enough to start either. He offers all the cons McGinn does except he does specialise in breaking up play.

Both are good characters, add a bit of depth, but lack the quality to get us to the top 6 if they're starters. Proximity to the start of the season is no reason to stick with them if they're not of the required standard. We at least need a CDM as a priority.

We won 7 drew 2 lost 3 with Barkley out. He was the problem lazy arse. Buendia 6th for tackles in Championship last season. Team is sum of all parts

Blaming it on Barkley is too simple, mcginn and Luiz were patchy at best last season, really poor at times, not convinced they work as a unit

If you say villa are an inconsistent mid table team that need to find consistency to push on, which for me is exactly what we are, then you need to take out the 2 inconsistent players in the middle of the pitch for a start

I think McGinn-Nakamba-Sanson behind Grealish-Watkins-Buendia is solid and energetic, and improves us without much drama. Unlikely to start with that though as Sanson is injured. I am also unsure this is how Smith see’s it, I think he wants Buendia sitting centrally similar to a 10, with Jack left and [Bailey] to the right, so that suggests a DM (Nakamba for now) and an improved McGinn or fit Sanson in the centre of the park.

I only see JWP in a similar position as McGinn, and not sure where that leaves McGinn Luiz and Sanson long term unless we intend to work with a bigger squad, which would be great. This is what surprises me as it would take £45m ish to land him, and can we justify that? Is he that much of an improvement (to benefit from his set pieces he has to be on the field all the time so he would surely displace McGinn long term)?

The biggest issue for me is how often they give the ball away needlessly. We are not always that great at winning the ball in the first place so then to just give it away is infuriating! McGinn and Luiz are both guilty of some shockingly poor passing at times. McGinn also gets dispossessed way too often whilst trying to arse his way out of trouble!

It's not happening. Southampton journo works for Athletic said the link is "total bollocks" according to club sources like I suspected on here from the beginning mainly because he signed 5 year extension last year

From what I can tell having a quick look last season 4 times we played Nakamba McGinn in mid 2 pairing with Luiz not starting, we beat Arsenal and  Leeds 1-0 and Spurs and Chelsea. The first 2 Barkley played and I've already said how Buendia is massive upgrade on Barkley.

What's the problem based on those results? Is it because of meaningless Stoke friendly?

Despite Kiwi's best efforts, I agree. Martinez faced a lot of shots last season and we rarely looked tight. Just signing Buendia isn't going to make all that difference and I don't think Barkley was really 'the problem'.

We're supposed to be improving as a team and it's going to require investment.
