Except when he pocketed Mbappe like a child in the UCL. Absolutely incredible performance and I’d love him back here, reckon he’d thrive in a more positive environment.

Was M'bappé's second game back after having been out 2 weeks with Covid and having been injured before that. But still a impressive performance by Tuanzebe.

Things are all a bit negative at the moment aren’t they. JT leaving, possibly losing Jack and the uncertainty surrounding that. Not signing players every other day. Losing to Stoke.

Could definitely do with some cheering up from somewhere

You can’t really look at the £50M in isolation though - I think I’ve been through this before but it’s essentially a risk-cost benefit analysis.

What’s the impact of Ollie goes down? What’s the impact of Jack goes down? What’s the impact it Martinez goes down? What’s the benefits of a new player if we do have injuries vs if we don’t? Can the player still play in the starting 11 when everyone’s fit? What’s the benefit of improving overall squad depth vs improving positions of weakness? What is the likelihood of each of these occurring? Etc

Personally, I’m okay with going into the season at ST with what we have IF Smith and the team give it the tick of approval. I would also completely understand if a player like Alvarez was brought in as a cheapish backup who can cover in a number of positions.

I’d agree it’s not a simple yes or no question. It’s also one of those questions that we could all be very clever about in hindsight.

Like you say the people who make the decisions we have to accept that they have more knowledge of the multiple factors that go together and have to be considered. After all that, it is still really only their best guess, albeit a pretty well informed one. Ollie for example could continue his good injury record or suffer a leg break the day after the window closes. Nobody’s got a crystal ball.

I know it’s funny how commentators go on about Newcastle fans liking a number 9, like it’s somehow unique that fans like the guy who scores the goals, but it is actually pretty unique that Aston Villa fans seem to worship our central defenders, and probably more than any other position on the pitch.

I don’t think it’s related to position, just a case of our best performing players regardless of position. Such as how Jack is adored now…

Maybe a little damning that defenders have been our better players in our more recent history…

Mohamed Ihattaren, 19 year old attacking midfielder at PSV, has not flown to Turkey for their 2nd leg Champions League qualifier with Galatasaray. He was in their squad for the first leg but didn't start. Supposedly he is just sick but he has one year left on his contract so a transfer could be coming.

He's a similar player to Smith-Rowe in some respects so could be one to watch. Can see him being linked with some English clubs in the coming days.

Alvarez fits the ball, we could have a genuine star on our hands that we can develop and ease in. He can cover all attacking positions too.

Our 2 Emis will help him settle in, no problem.

Yes, he could succeed Ollie eventually… maybe even Jack… he’s only 21 and has huge potential. Already capped by Argentina.

Been compared to Gary Shaw… he’s not going to cost a lot and his value will rise massively, if he’s a success here (I don’t doubt he would be)

We don’t want or need a typical CF (e.g. a Darren Bent type), plus the game seems to have moved on from that kind of player.

Part of the reason Ollie is so good is because he has a more all round and developed game or skillset (after playing as a winger too), coupled with his energy and work rate…

I agree with you mate, I'd be down for anyone arriving for the role and to help Watkins out so long as it's not Davis and Wesley.

I mean I wouldn’t say no if it worked - my concern would be it takes away from some of Buendia’s best assets in the final third and he’s a willing defender but I’m not sure he’s got the finesse to consistently break up the play without drawing cards.

He did well ithink other day when one of the Stoke players pissed him off and he just got on with it. Maybe Smith and Co will tone that side of him down, but I'd reckon he'd do a decent job at breaking up play and making smart moves from behind Jack who's in front of him.

The thing is Dave, as you know, breaking up play is an art/skill, just bashing in to players is cards and free kicks waiting to happen.

He seemed to have a fair bit of the play in that midfield area and I just though he coped rather well with it.

Yes it is an skill TRO and we do need a specialist at doing just that.

based on what? are they good coaches?....both good players.

Well, Terry had no experience of being a coach or manager. That’s the role we’re looking to fill? Someone who can offer something but also learn on the job.

Mellberg has coached/managed..

I’m not sure, but Laursen may have completed his badges (as JT did on the job with us) and has openly expressed a desire to return to the club…

Both excellent defenders, leaders, inspirational figures. Could teach and pass on a few things to our defenders…

Petrov has done his badges and I’m sure would be happy to return to us…

Doesn’t have to be a former player but if they fulfil the criteria, why not?

Cahill could give us short term CB cover and have the same experience & take up the same responsibilities as JT did, if he is so inclined…

Maybe Young could do the same…

Plenty of candidates out there… respect and admiration for certain past players could help our players to listen, learn and improve from them…

It’s not purely out of sentimentality, they need the right attributes and to fit the role but maybe an avenue worth pursuing…

We have a great manager and an experienced assistant already…

TRO, I asked you a question earlier (a day or two back) about why you think we were fine at the start of the season… midfield was not open back then…

I’d welcome your knowledge and opinion on the matter… shared my own…

If you’re interested that is.

I think a much better version, more consistent & an upgrade, on Barkely should massively help us… Buendia? Sure…

But I am still concerned about the status of our midfield… it’s a bit of a mess atm. We only really have Nakamba and McGinn available and of adequate quality, John needs to step up and be better & more disciplined this season. I was hoping Sanson could push him and take his place potentially but he’s still working his way to fitness.

None of the youngster are readily or suitable, including JJ, imo.

But yes, I would still like a DM.
Names? Sangare, Anguissa or Kamara.

Always interested in genuine critique.

I have been concerned about our midfield for some time, sure we have games where it is not as prevalent as others and you get by....Liverpool at home was a perfect example of it not being an issue, but you can't base your season on a game like that.

over 38 games, I think I can see, why midtable is a much as we can expect, unless we strengthen the middle of the park.

I hear all the deep lying playmakers malarkey, I just disagree with the notion of thinking we can blow teams away by buying better wingers and the like....We kept 15 clean sheets last season, magnificent, but if you was honest with yourself, Emi M was hugely instrumental in that....we have a decent defence, but we defend too deep in too many games....the theory that the better quality forwards can keep the ball, is for the birds, sure it helps, but all teams lose the ball, the better ones less granted.....but you can't allow teams to just ride roughshod through the middle unchallenged and it happens and it wil happen again next season ,too many times...mark my words.

unless some unseen business is about to happen, that I don't expect.
