Milinkovic-Savic would be an incredible (and very expensive) signing, very unlikely though. Would strengthen our MF significantly and allow us to mix it with the top sides.

Why would it be that unlikely in your mind? I know he's been linked with likes of Juve, Man United and PSG in last three years but ultimately he's still playing for Lazio and they'll likely be finishing 6th.

West Ham three years ago signed one of Lazio's best attacking players and they finished 13th. Lazio that season finished 5th.

We'd obviously have to sell the next 5 years very well to him as he's had seasons in the CL playing for them but I don't think that's as unrealistic as some of the other names being mentioned on here as many serbs have come to England and had a great time here. He only has to tlak to Mitrovic, Ivanovic, Kolarov in international set up to know that.

I doubt he's on 100k a week there and has two years left on his deal so it feels to me the deal could just about be in our reach compared to say Coutinho which is a completely unrealistic deal for us at this point in time.

Everton sign Barcelona back up players, Leicester signed a key starter for Atalanta last summer, Leeds signed a first choice striker for CL team (Valencia) and Spain last summer, West Ham I've mentioned as mid table team signed likes of Yarmolenko, Fornals and Anderson.

Are we really years and years off that sort? If so what is the problem, club perception abroad, not being based in London? Not likely to finish top half in the prem? The manager? Fair enough on FFP but a) that could easily be scrapped or watered down and surely won't be a problem for us in next two years. By end of 2023 season we'll hopefully have been a prem team for four years so it surely won't be an issue then.

you explain the point eloquently.....but if folk can't see it, they can't see it.

lets just hope the management can.

someone mentioned Sergej Milinkovic-savic.....now he looks just the job on paper.

This will get you frothing at the mouth TRO....sorry if it's not as good as Tonev highlights reel though!

We most certainly will not be signing Milinkovic Savic, and while a very good player he is not the DCM or ACM specialist that people are asking for although he usually plays a more advanced role for Serbia.

Edit: While not really that similar he's kind of a much, much better version of Sander Berge who also isn't the DCM people are hoping for. They did both come through in Belgium and at one point Lazio were looking at Berge to replace Savic if he was sold.

I would love it but it does seem unlikely. Maybe not impossible though.

Fairly high profile player, has interested and been linked to the “elite clubs” in the past . Big fee and wages, I don’t think it lines up with our usual strategy but you never know, the owners may be willing to make the odd exception. We certainly wouldn’t be one of his top choices if he decided to leave.

I would like us to attempt to sign these players but I don’t know if it lines up with the owners/club vision. He would greatly enhance us though.

Also, I think to sign such a player we would have to sign a few others of that quality & stature around the same time, to convince them to come here... would cost a lot but it would definitely improve us.

City did amazingly to get both Silva & Toure in all those years ago (Dzeko too?) and it transformed them.

Who knows... maybe we could do something similar. But we are restricted from spending so lavishly (FFP).

Again, our strategy so far has been (and also stated by Purslow several times) to bring in young, developing players whose value will continue to rise. And each year we will look to raise the bar in terms of quality.

Sometimes, splashing out can be very beneficial though but it has to be done with intelligence and a certain degree of foresight.

Signing a marketable player can also raise the club profile, increase shirt & merchandise sales etc.

There’s a lot to consider and take into account. Only worth spending big if the benefit is great enough in all aspects.

Short term fixes are always damaging, we must avoid those at all costs.

I think it’s best to keep our expectations in check so we are not disappointed. And if we do manage to pull off a stellar signing it will be all the more delightful! 😆

But it’s also good to see us sign young, developing players that are not so renowned and can surprise everyone with their ability and performances. And can stick with us for the long term.

I don’t think we have the capacity to be able to get the kind of players that could immediately propel us into top 4-6 contention. Those days are gone sadly with FFP brought in largely to protect the top clubs from being threatened too much...

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Dean Smith saying our owners want us challenging for champions league and the title and we've 'got plates spinning' with regards to transfers to make that happen. So I expect we're going to be in the market for a whole new level of player in the summer, will probably surprise a few people.

Are you his agent? You've literally advertised him what seems like every day on this thread.

Nope just a fan who knows he is perfect for us.

That sounds exciting.

I agree.

but I wouldn't necessarily sell McGinn and Luiz.....just create more competition for places.

I think Luiz just needs to work on his game, in specific ways.

Absolutely, wouldn't sell either. I'd just get in a more specialist player in that position to play alongside one of them and rotate Luiz and McGinn based on form and opposition.

Some really shitty finishing by his fellow players in that vid 😆

He has the lot, an exceptional player.

Lol I never said that.

do they think, that fans like me who do promote the big and powerful, if we signed players like like that, would have any complaints from me?

power is usually associated with size, but not always there are other factors too.....to pick out the worlds best smaller CDM's is kinda missing the point.

However, when it comes to weighing in with a few back post headers or clearances.....the taller ones do have a natural advantage.

Size is a tendency, for what we are looking for.....not set in tablets of stone.

Johnny Giles and Billy Bremner, were 2 of the best Central Midfielders of their day, they wasn't big.........but Viera and Toure was amongst the best in their day and they were big.

I just prefer a good big 'un over a good little'un.

I made it up.

These are the actual quotes from the Birmingham Mail...

"The ambition of the owners is to be challenging – regularly – for the Champions League places and the Premier League,

That's what they want to do. We have an Egyptian owner and an American owner – and they want to grow the Aston Villa brand worldwide.

To do that we need to be competing at the top end of the Premier League – and that’s where we are aiming to go.

We have a recruitment strategy and there are lots of plates spinning at the moment and that’s where we, as a club, are very fortunate to have the owners we do.

Whenever I speak to them, one of the things they talk about is the club’s history.

They did their research before they even arrived. They are driving this club forward. We want success.

The high-performance centre we have had built here – opened by Prince William last week – is growing the club.

It does take time to catch up with teams who have been in the Premier League for 20-odd years in succession because of the finances they have enjoyed.

What you’re hoping to do is overtake some of those who haven’t spent as wisely as they could.

But what these owners have shown – already I might add – is that they are willing to finance us closing that gap. And we feel we can certainly close that gap.

I’m excited as the head coach of Aston Villa. But I’m excited for the supporters too – I believe these owners are the real deal."

I don't think Milinkovic-Savic is that unrealistic.  I reckon we are going to be in the position where we will be able to offer significantly over £100k per week to the right players.  If we could get him and McNeill in and allow us options as to where we play Jack we would be flying.
