I wouldn't call bringing the youth into the 1st XI stagnating.

It’s stagnating if placement isn’t improved upon but only time will tell.

Only time will tell but it could just as easily be positioned as it is an exciting progressive move by the club to bring the youth in  but we don't know how it will work out and only time will tell. 'Stagnating' is more narrative than objective

This window currently is a somewhere between a 6 and a 7.

Ings and Buendia look like they have settled already, and will be big players for us.

Tuanzube and Young are solid squad players that improve our ability to get results amid injuries and packed scheduling.

Bailey seemed unfit despite the effective cameo v Watford. Has not made the last two squads. A little concerned, but should be up there with Ings and Buendia.

On the flip side:

Still need a specialist 6. Luiz will tire come January or February. Hasn't has a proper break, played Copa America then Olympics. Nakamba is not first team quality imo, and has AFCON in January.

I would have liked a pacy young left back capable of snatching Targett's place.

We loaned out both Kessler and Guilbert so now have Young as cover for both fullback positions and then it's CB's at right back and left back.

Tuanzebe is only a loan. Would have preferred a permanent option.

Grealish gone. The team should be marginally better with the players we brought in. But Jack was the one true world class player in our squad and now he is gone. If we had kept him and still brought in Buendia, Young and Tuanzebe we'd be even better, add one of Bailey or Ings and champions league qualification becomes possible. Now 7th is our best possible outcome. 10th to 12th place is most likely, as we have to rebuild our attack amongst an injury crisis, disrupted preseason, and an all new attacking line up.

Not spending more and giving the youngsters a chance could save us money and means we have room to spend more in future windows, this is a smart choice, although a little safe.

Don't know if this has been posted here or not but I agree with every word of this. Great thread.

Given that the club can understand our strategy and the club have visibility of our finances I suspect the club can see things that fans cannot. It is just a hunch, but I am guessing Purslow, Smith, Lange and the coaches know more about what is happening that we do. I could be wrong but that is just a hunch I have

Yeah I understand what you’re saying. This isn’t a dig against you or Villa fans as Villa have become my number one club to support but for quite a while now all I’ve heard or seen is that Villa are a club in transition, 5 year plans and it will take time to bring the youth through.

When are Villa actually going to build a team to win something or challenge for Europe again?

The club have now got owners with deep pockets so why not utilise that in the now rather than the future when with a bit more quality Villa could push on.

Furthermore, what if those young players don’t cut it? Villa will continue to be seen as sleeping giants who in Roy Keane’s words ‘don’t win anything.’

Yet for how lovely and amazingly planned this exact current situation is, the club seemed pretty keen on getting JWP and or ESR.

It's almost as if the club wanted to invest more but missed out on targets. So in that case, they're not happy with what we've got.

If we fail to push on this season, you could well imagine Martinez being the next to leave us next summer. The club aren't screaming ambition to me at least.

We were in the Championship 3 seasons ago. We need some time to build a team and to gain the experience to make a move for Europe. Getting to the top is not an easy task. We have owners with very deep pockets and they continue to demonstrate this by investing massively in the club. They have invested multiple of the purchase price of the club into players, management and infrastructure. We may have been sleeping giants but we need a little time to wake up. And yes, I agree, the young may not cut it. But brining in youth is the stated slub strategy. If it doesn't work first time then we keep at it until it does work. But if we never give it a chance to work then we will never know.

Do u really think offering 25m/30m for JWP was realistic and do you really believe that the club believed Saints would actually sell him for that price? We chanced our arm, thought we saw an opportunity and it didn't work out. ESR was another similar transfer bid. They were both looking to see if we could pick up a bargain. Every club will need to have multiple options for their transfer window as their primary objectives do not always work out. Harry Kane is not a Man City player yet it is reported he was their primary target.

What if the right target we wanted just wasn't available and they felt there was no point spending for the sake of it?

Why let teams hold us to ransom because they know full well we have £100m in the bank?

Sensible clubs don't make signings for the sake of it and don't spend unsustainably. I absolutely believe the reason they didn't sign one was because the right value for money didn't come up.

I'd have liked a midfielder too but I don't think it's as big an issue as people are making out.

The absolute main weakness from last season was creating chances without Grealish in the team. I think we've addressed that issue.

No offense, but you seem to me to be making big calls on the club's motivation and so on that you can't really know for certain. It comes across as a little too much positive spin, and I just don't believe it. You seem to be ignoring all the times we were told European football is the aim. Plenty of things surely happened in the summer that none of us know about for sure, but it's not an out there thought that the club weren't able to recruit exactly as they had planned. It doesn't all always have to be roses. I wouldn't aim my disappointment at any individual, from the owners to Smith or Lange, but, again, it's not a mad position some of us find ourselves in, wondering if the big talk about our near future may have hit a snag or two for whatever reason.

The moaning about other people moaning has hit a whole new level.

Wonderful ironic entertainment. Please do moan away harder, louder, and in a far more loyal way than the other moaners, it is something special!

Yeah, it is up there with the amount of pointless comments about other people on the blog that have nothing to do with football. But thinking about it, the moaners could have a point as they are annoyed about our transfer window and possibly that we haven't signed a DM. They could well have a point (time will tell) and as their moans are actually related to football and Aston Villa it is appropriate to express them here. So the pointless comments are probably worse than the moaners.

I am well aware that European football is the aim, but it wasn't said that it was the aim for our third season in the PL. I also recall NSWE and CP say quite clearly that sustainability and developing players was our strategy for the club. I completely understand why people are feeling nervous, it is not unreasonable to assume another 100m would be added to the transfer budget this summer. But FFP and the ability to develop players would have been negatively impacted if we had done so. To me, it appears that NSWE and CP and continuing to do what they said they would do

It's a bit harsh to call it "pointless" and "not related to football"

He's showing appreciation for the owners on where we are now compared to where we were just a couple of years ago and asking for patience and trust.

Well, that’s a wrap. The fun and speculating is over… looking up players, watching vids n checking stats…

Time to try and enjoy and support this team and set of players… hopefully we will surprise and entertain and even exceed expectations.

Just need to get our best players out there on that pitch and hitting their rhythm…

It was fun…
