Why must they be able to turn games, are we demanding they be Kontes? Our team seemed to settle down once Ramsey came on during Watford and was arguably our most solid player against Newcastle. He seems to be trending towards a more reliable player this season. As for Chuk, he was okay against Brentford but is still a ways off from being a consistently solid contributor.

So if they are not there to help do that, what are you expecting of that position?

Yeh generally speaking we net spent less than probably everyone.

Also gotta take that chart with a pinch of salt says spurs have only spent 60 mill??(Romero 42.5,Gill 25,Sarr 15,Emerson Royal 25)

Gylfi Sigurdsson might struggle to find another club 🤔

As will the members of the Icelandic FA who have just stepped down from their roles.

Despite loosing Jack Grealish I feel we’ve done well in this window

Jack’s money alone has vastly improved the squad depth

Our first 11 on paper looks stronger, yet that’s still pending on fitness/injuries/covid

Intentional or not, we are in a net positive on transfers, for the first time in years. That’s got to keep the accountants happy as well as the FFP police.

Unfortunately for some, our midfield wasn’t improved, yet this isn’t necessary bad, it gives an open door for JJ and Chukz to get game time. Touch wood, this would rapidly improve them to the players “we need”. No new DM gives Doug one more go to reach his so called potential.

With all the attacking players we have now, it might reduce Smith’s need/desire to overload the final third with the midfield. Keeping players like McGinn and Doug in position and less likely to be caught out by counters..

I’m not expecting European football, or an improvement on points this season. This is due to our (understandably) meh start and potential problems with player isolations down the line.
Where I think we will improve is, from our youngsters coming through and Smith ironing out some tactical problems.

hopefully, we are a season or two away from mounting a sustainable go at European football. Not just one season and rebuild for another go, but a go we can keep doing for years to come.

A very good point. I was unimpressed with Luiz last year but he has the chance again now to really show he can develop into a top player. I was impressed with his performance against Brentford, but he needs to play like that more often. He has the horrible job of receiving the ball under pressure with his back to the opposition and popping it off to another Villa player. I think it's the toughest position to play in many respects. Good deep lying playmakers are scarce. I really hope Luiz has a super season and we then compliment him next Summer with a player to play alongside him.

If he has a bad season though, we as a team will struggle. A lot depends on how well he plays. I have no doubt if he doesn't perform then he'll be moved on next year. Potential is great but we can't wait forever for him to realise it. In many respects, after a poor season just gone, he is quite lucky, with the owners we have, that he hasn't been replaced by one or two players that play in that position.

The same can be said for a lot of our midfielders. McGinn and Sanson need to show they can step up without Grealish and dominate games otherwise you can guarantee the next area of the team that is upgraded will be the midfield.

All in all its an improvement on last season. Definitely a better front line, even with Grealish going. More dynamism in midfield with the improvement of Ramsey and addition of Sanson. Better cover in defence at full back and hopefully CB if Tuanzebe can stay fit.

You could say we don't have any other Luiz or Nakamba style players, but they are more specialist roles depending on the opposition. Generally I think Dean likes all action box to box types in the midfield 3 and we are well covered for those.

If I'm honest, I don't think West Ham needed to have a better window than us, as they already had/have a more balanced squad. So trying to compare windows doesn't tell the full story.

Really? They are better in central midfield than us (which is weirdly where they seem to have brought most players in this window) but elsewhere I'd say we are at least as good, if not stronger. Martinez is better than any of their GK options (though tbf they have a lot of depth here), defensively they've got more experienced players but not sure I'd take any of them over Konsa or Mings, though Zouma should improve them. Coufal and Cresswell are decent, but not sure I'd swap them for Targett or Cash given ages. And I'm taking Watkins, Ings, Buendia, Bailey, Traore over Antonia, Bowen, Benrahma, Fornals, Yarmalenko.

If our targets were judged to be damagingly expensive then I'm satisfied that the right expenditure decision was made.

Signing Buendia, Bailey, Ings and Young, and bringing Tuanzebe in on loan was good business for one transfer window imo.

Freeing up the expenditure of wages for Grealish, Elmohamady, Heaton, Taylor and Engels makes a difference. Also further reducing the wage bill by loaning out Wesley, Hourihane, Gilbert and Kalinic should not be overlooked.

If we're committed to season on season progress then the financial health of the club within current FFP rules (whatever the hell they are now) is key.

The fact that we're bottom of the outgoing expenditure league can be viewed as a positive going forward.

We could find this becoming a trend in the seasons ahead if our youth players turn out to be as good as we believe they can be.

It definitely has the look of a 'Wes Eden's' style project.

Very interesting.

I think we'll see a year of consolidation this year, see how the youngsters do and then go big again next summer. I was a little disappointed by the window we've had but clubs did know we had money to burn. Perhaps we couldn't get value?

Might the lack of a big money DM signing mean that we see Raikhy as the long term answer there? He might be ready to start games next season.

Bold claim. I hope he is, but can't see it next year. IF he ever makes it as a PL player, I dont think it will be for a couple of years yet at least.

I actually think Villa were two signings away (midfielders) from challenging for Europe this season. Would it not have been worth it to invest heavily now and bed those two new midfielders in over the course of the season than wait until January or next season? By not investing now you are running the risk of losing out to the top four when those players (Kamara) are out of contract or in the case of Bissouma only one year left on his contract next season.

I honestly feel Villa although signing some very good players this window to replace Grealish still have not addressed their major weakness in midfield. You have numbers there but those aforementioned signings above would have improved Villa’s midfield dramatically while also allowing the younger players coming through more time to bed in.

Furthermore, in my humble opinion, by letting Guilbert go on loan, fullback positions have also been weakened. Yes you have Young, but are Villa really going to rely on a 36 year old throughout a season for cover especially when Target’s lack of pace was shown again against Watford and Cash’s performances haven’t been exactly great at the start of this season. I also don’t think anyone wants to see CBs playing at FB anymore.

I was one of those ardent critics when Grealish left. But who can blame him now for leaving when Villa still have two major weaknesses in their team unaddressed after having net expenditure in the transfer window?

Maybe Terry left for the same reason knowing the owner’s ambitions would yet again fall short of what was promised?
