JWP at £50m was not the right player at the right price, if that was the suggestion @striker

A great player, a set piece specialist, but not what we need (and especially not what we need to pay over the odds for). Had we bought him, we’d play one game and many would still be asking for a new defensive midfielder.

It was really encouraging but we need to remember that in old money, Barrow are a poor fourth division team. None of our young lads are ready to start many PL games.

Agreed. The young lads played brilliantly yesterday, I don’t think anyone is knocking that, but the gulf of quality between Barrow and Premier League teams is enormous.

Let’s not get too carried away and think that one good game against lower league opposition means they’re ready to make the step up just yet.

Fair point.

We don't know for sure what DS sees as our needs or how much he has to spend.

Pape Sarr, the guy from Brighton (bissomoa) would fit the bill for me. Both at clubs where they will be sold at a price.

Either DS doesn't want either of those or he can't add to the first team squad for financial reasons.

No disrespect to the current squad - but improvements are out there............at a price. !!!

Yep that would making a good situation bad. We do have to concentrate on the here and now.

With respect, Chukwuemeka and Philogene-Bidace have both shown against much better opposition than Barrow that they are capable of making the step up.

Who knows if same is true of the rest, time will tell, but I think you're mistaking their youth for something else. They need blooding, but how much will come down to how mature they are, and whether they have the physique and physicality for PL football yet.

I’d find it bizarre if we were done in the market. We’ve lost Grealish and replaced him with two right sided forwards and a striker? Strange goings on.

Just points to a tough season but one where we consolidate I guess. Just got to make sure we get to 40 points as quickly as possible. If Bailey and Buendia don’t impress, we could get dragged into a dogfight.

Also, I’ve been wondering about LW… would it not benefit us to get a high quality player for that position?

Just think we’ll play a Liverpool front three instead of Villa last season front three. Difference being 3 forwards across the width of the penalty box instead a striker and two wingers.  So Watkins, Ings and Bailey in those three forward positions. Buendia in midfield.

I also think we may mix it up formation wise occasionally depending who we are playing and how defensive or attacking we want to be and switch between 433 and 4231 formations.

My biggest concern, losing our best and only creative player and hoping these two click and quickly at the level we need.  It’s a big ask of them and I’m hopeful obviously.

Me too, and it’s not inconceivable that we improve without Grealish but I’m not sure we’ve done quite enough for that to happen.

I’m still positive Buendia was brought in to play alongside Grealish so it seems odd that we weren’t looking to buy a central midfielder if Jack had stayed. Now, with all that money, it seems even stranger!

McKennie in the third kit kit tomorrow?

😆

Does anyone actually think McKennie is a serious link? Can’t see it at the moment if I’m honest and just to add into the mix with Jack going I’m a little bit underwhelmed by our business. Really like the look of Bailey and Ings but not sure where emi fits in but losing Jack and still being £5 in profit makes no sense. Big sides spend consistently year on year I know we spent big first year back and spent a fair bit last season but that’s what it needs to be to keep progressing and with Jack gone that’s a big backward step that we need to sort out

He’s not been linked to us.

Deano has said so.

Well if Bailey’s time against Watford is any indication then he will be fine.

I would say replaced him with a very creative player, a speedy winger who can do it all and a  proven Premier League quality striker, all positions/qualities we wanted filling.
Also I look at Buendia and Bailey as two players on the cusp of the top top level, not as players that can fail so badly that we are mixing it in the bottom 5. I agree improvements can be made but with everything else going on in the world you should feel safe in the knowledge we will stay up comfortably.

Yeah but that’s not evidence, I need to see a number of games to get an indication really.

But as the quality of our squad gets better and better the standard of player needed to improve our first 11 moves up to the very elite, and it gets very hard to persuade those players to come here. It’s clear we wanted JWP and ESR but they’ve both refused to force a move here - I reckon they’d have been more proactive about forcing a move if it were Liverpool after them. I think there’s every chance Sarr has turned us down in favour of spurs. There’s no point in settling for fourth or fifth choice targets if they’re not much better than what we have.
