Summer transfer window 2021

It’s an underwhelming signing, but he’s better than all of our other midfielders. Jury still out on Sanson.

He’s great defensively, averages more than 3 tackles per 90 in his career, and on top of that is very good with the ball. My only issue is that he’s quite slow. It’d be about £10m, and if it means we can buy Bailey, Alvarez, CB and GK, then it’s a decent decision.

Hearing from a Watford mate of mine that he thinks Will Hughes to us is happening.

Suprised by that as his stats are not great (certainly not for a side looking to break the top 6) and I know Smith is keen on looking at the figures to support his decision making.

He clearly isn't though.

I have been expecting these links to Hughes. Shakespeare is a massive fan and Hughes only has a year left on his contract. He will be much better than any of our current midfielders when taking the ball from the defenders, on the half turn and feeding our attackers. He is not maybe what we were all hoping for but for less than £10m it is a clever bit of business. Hopefully this will mean (if it does happen) that we can sign a couple of more high profile players too.

Just more speculation which I know you get really angry about 😉

Have no problem with any unless it seems obvious bollocks like the JWP one where the author probably didn't even bother to check he'd signed 5 year extension last year before inventing the story

I've also heard these whispers about Hughes - not sure how true they are but he's likely to be available as only one year left.

My Watford supporting mate rates him highly, especially since he has moved to a deeper role.

It's not a 'worldie' signing but if we're paying Jack £200k and the trade off is Hughes rather than (e.g.) Bissouma I'm totally happy with that.

i think it does. need to put pressure on mcginn to perform and be nice to send JJ on loan too, as i don't think he's ready. a perfectly acceptable addition to the squad IMO

Totally forgot about Ramsey. Yes, as a replacement for him, if he moves out on loan, then that makes more sense.

He can play the DCM role better than any of our other options. He can tackle, uses the ball well, reads the game well and although he is not fast he can press effectively. Not earth shattering but could be a vital piece of the overall transfer jig saw.

The Shakespeare link is what makes me think we may be in for him..

https://www.shropshirestar.com/sport/uk-sports/2020/06/24/will-hughes-backed-to-play-for-england-by-watford-coach-craig-shakespeare/

“I thought he was outstanding again on Saturday,” Shakespeare said of Hughes.
“It is our job to drive him, he has the potential to get even better. I know he got into the Derby team as a young player and now he has established himself as a fully-grown Premier League player who should have international ambitions"
“That is not to say that I am putting pressure on his shoulders, I think he is that good.
“We are really pleased to have him in our team and he is another one who is contributing to the team.
“I don’t want to get carried away with individuals but we are very, very pleased with Will’s contribution at the moment.”

Terry out…Cahill in? Short term CB cover and take on the analysis and coaching role JT did?

Would give us extra time and spare funds to sign a proper young defender the following season too…

Done a quick compare on fbref of Hughes stats with McGinn and Luiz. He’s slightly better than both for defensive actions (not much in it with Luiz) but worse than both in all other areas including pass completion %.

If Deano wants him then fair enough, but why is a different question.

Hughes is a good player,  but I don't believe this link, that Watford fan probably thinks he's signing for us just because we've been linked previously and he hasn't signed a new contract rather than having any actual knowledge of what's going to happen. I

f we go for a midfielder I think it will be more likely a specialist DM, one that's had more experience and at an higher level than the half a season in the championship that Hughes has had playing there, as oood as he apprently was in the role.

Also I don't think Jacob Ramsey will be going anywhere on loan, he's looked very good in pre season so far and I'd expect him to stay with us and have a good season.
