Obviously the semi and final are more famous but I come back to this game frequently. If it wasn't for Bosnich, we could have lost 7-4. What a smash and grabĀ šŸ‘

Wow, you forget how good some of those players were, Atkinson looked unplayable, abs Bosnich was immense.

And thatā€™s with the ball looking like it was made with lead!

Big Ron too, what a great video.Ā

Me and a couple ofĀ mates went to this game, had a couple of beers beforehand in the Roker hotel with the home fans and all was ok.

Afterwards it was absolute mayhem, homeĀ fans trying to climb into the away end before the final whistle, bottles and bricks raining on us.

Also got 3 points on the way for speeding!

90% of the thoseĀ challenges would result in yellow cards now days !!

Bosnich was a greatĀ keeper , donā€™t think footage exists but that save I saw him make at VP v Coventry he seems to defy gravityĀ

edit - ok there is footage , could have sworn at theĀ time it was better than it looks hereĀ

I went to that game. There was a bit of trouble in our pub pre match but generally fairly well natured. It was a bit toxic after.

Bosnich was unbelievable that day. Saved about 5 one on onesĀ

Exactly my thoughts - that footage doesn't do that save justice.

The holte just broke into spontaneous applause - to which Bosnich acknowledged - great times!

Bit off topic but did anybody go to the league cup game away at West Ham in about 1990? We got rammed in to a small terrace and ended up standing on the pitch behind the goal whilst the game continued. Spinky saved a penalty whilst we were stood behind his goal if I recall right.

The atmosphere was toxic. I remember walking through a mass of fighting afterwards. My dad got hit in the head by a coin. Did not feel safe again until we were north of Watford! Those boys down there are lunatics!

Strangely I went to the game too, but had the opposite experience - in the New Derby Arms before the game all was peaceful, then some numpty Villa fan threw a glass at the Sunderland fans and melee ensued. Loads of Police came. As I was attempting to leave the pub the doorway was blocked by a police horse. It was drooling on my coat. A Copper grabbed me and all the Sunderland fans were shouting at the police to nick me as "he did it" (I didn't). Something distracted the copper, or he decided to tactically let me go, because he eased his grip on my shoulder and coat, as he perhaps didn't want to do paperwork - anyway, I took the opportunity to wriggle free and leg Ā it....

Years later I was telling this tale to another Villa fan in a pub in Oslo before StrĆømsgodset away, and he shouted to his mate to come across - his mate was the glass throwing numpty! They thought it was all hilarious. To be fair they' (presumably) grown up a bit by then and were sound lads, it turned out.

I was in the pub too. I remember the police having a villa fan with long hair face down in the tarmac outside. The atmosphere in the pub had been great before that guy threw the glass. Numpty!

If itā€™s the one Iā€™m thinking of it was like crush conditions in the away end ,Ā Few of usĀ actually climbed up into the rafters to escape it ... think eventually the rozzers opened the gates down the front so some fans could get out .

after the game it was the usual carnage outside where the police made us wait for an escort and the West Ham fans had time to wait for us ... police put everyone on the tube then buggered off and there were fights all all over the district lineĀ

Went to the Sunderland game too. Just round the corner from where I was living at the time, as a student. Don't remember seeing any trouble but it was definitely the biggest 4-1 smash and grab I've ever witnessed. Bozzie stopped everything and we scored from every attack we had. At least that's how I remember it ā˜ŗļø

Yes I do, I went to it if I recall they had airport style turnstiles Being trialled for the first time, It went bang off afterwards but nowhere near as bad as it did in 1978 FA Cup quarter final. We had about eight or 9000 down that day And the bastards were stillĀ mixed in amongst us kicking off gameĀ

I remember big Ron after the game.

"There was only 1 team in it ....and they lost 4-1"

If you recallĀ the interview before they asked him what Villa needed to do to get a result today and he said firstly we have to combat the Roker roaršŸ¤£

When Dalian could be arsed he WAS unplayable.

Sadly that was one game in five or six in reality.

He also was nicknamed Sicknote for a reason šŸ˜
