Wayne Rooney

You can understand the sentiment, it's kind of weird thinking about how he's England's record goalscorer considering he hasn't had a good tournament other than Euro 2004 when he was 18 where he scored 4 goals. He only scored 3 more major tournament goals after this, in 3 different tournaments. The bulk of his goals scored were in qualification, usually against the minnows of Europe. I think the biggest country he scored a competitive goal against was Croatia at Euro 04, and I don't think they were even that good back then. He really disappointed on the major stage where players like Shearer and Kane to an extent stepped up.

Harry Kane is actually the same though, of his 44 international goals only 4 have been against a big nation and 1 in a competitive game also Croatia.

Rooney scored 4 vs Croatia and also vs Uruguay in conpetitive games

Indeed.  I was at that Uruguay game in Sao Paolo and Rooney equalised late on out of nowhere. It looked like we had secured a vital point until yet again we let Cavani and that horrible little shit Suarez break free.

Rooney would have been even more successful at major tournaments if not for injuries too.

As for Rooney the manager? Just can’t see it personally.

This habit of giving former top players Championship or above jobs is ridiculous, it rarely works out well. Ability as a player has no relevance to ability as a manager.

I honestly think any manager needs to learn their craft lower down, build their bank of experience and work their way up if they deserve to do so.

It seems like something that they might have agreed or at least talked about when he joined and they were in a much better position the year after we beat them in the final, come to Derby push us over the line, do your badges, get first offer if we change the manager etc but then they've actually ended up being shit rather than getting promoted

Then you add in the 32red stuff and it looks like Derby have done a bit of a shady deal a year in the making, which if he undermined cocu and the set up might explain why they've gone to shit

Didn't seem like he had the dedication to succeed as a player towards the end of his career so IMO it's doubtful he would have it towards being a manager either.

Having played under Fergie doesn't automatically make you a good manager as we've seen on a fair few occasions.

Can see this ending badly. Always a very instinctual player for me and obviously doesn’t come across as the brightest.

Agree with Trent in that just handing these jobs to ex-players with zero experience, in what is a very competitive league, is absolutely ridiculous.

Wonder if they are banking on him having United connections in the same way Lampard had his at Chelsea in terms of the loan players he brought in. It’s all going to end in tears though.

What has Kane done at international level? Other than from spot kicks? And look at the teams he has scored against. Talk about Minnows. Panama? Tunisia?

Rooney was a phenomenal player and will be remembered at such. Kane has won sod all and done very little for England at this stage. Calling Kane an England great, as the previous poster alluded to, is just crazy.

I never called Kane a great just yet and in another post I said Rooney had more talent than Kane. You just can not discount the poor performances in major competitions.

Difficult to argue with any of your post, though as Derby currently sit just below our friendly neighbours, it's fair to say that everyone (including yourself no doubt) hope that you're wrong 🤣

He was that good at 18 he should have ended up an all-time great. It never quite happened, still an excellent player of course but mostly for Man Utd, did very little for England after Euro 2004.

Apart from being the all time England goal scorer and having 120 caps.  His best 2 seasons in terms of goals were 2009-2010 and 11-12, in which he was in his mid  20s and at his peak, not when he was a teenager. He was a bit of a flat track bully for England and he was not consistent as he only scored 30 plus goals in 2 seasons, which marks him down for me in being truly world class. Also by about 30 he really declined quite a lot and lost a lot of mobility.

Kane is far from finished though. Hes got many years ahead of him to rectify that and help  England win a major trophy with Jack being part of it. Hes already helped England to the semi-final of a world cup which Rooney never did.

Not really Kane is 28 now, probably has 2 tournaments left. Didnt turn up in the big knockout games when England needed him and people tend to forget his diastrous Euro 2016

2 World cups left... Maybe 3 euros

Got to think 2 tournaments takes him up to December next year

One things for sure, he'll beat Rooneys goal record but the outfield caps record looks pretty safe for 10 years at least

The "only doing vs the minnows" thing is a criticism you can throw at every England player for the last 30 years

True, in international football you don't really play that many meaningful matches against the top teams so any player is likely to score the vast majority of their goals against minnows.  You could also argue our crap managers turned us into minnows ourselves in major tournaments.

Rooney had a great career.

What was it a champions league, ridiculous number of league titles and cups, record Man. United goalscorer, record England goalscorer, many top performances in CL, he did alright.

He did look amazing at 16 and so the hype factor went into overdrive "new Pele" etc so if you think he should've won 5 balon D'Ors on the spin or something he underachieved but then so did many other english players for various reasons particularly in international tournaments.

Only disappointment for me is you look at longevity of most forwards and they're still doing it well into their 30s nowadays, Ronaldo, Messi, Lewa, Benzema, Suarez etc. Rooney seemed to drop off a cliff in endurance level from about 28 so not for first time Fergie got it right thinking he was done at Man. United level and wanted to move him on before he decided to retire.

He really wasn't that great for last 2-3 years at Man. United particularly as they started to play him more in midfield as did England but Euro 2016 when he was still just 30 showed he was miles off being top class in that position and then he stopped getting called up a few months later which was a good decision from Southgate.
