After that his goal record was still good and he scored some stunners like that Man. City overhead kick (and also in CL final that season) but he wasn't quite the same all round force. Think Rooney is similar to Andy Murray in a way in perception. If you compare Murray to Federer, Nadal or Djokovic he obviously comes up short but Murray in his own right was amazing tennis player and did things no other British player has done in a long time and will be as long wait to get someone as good again. Obviously a little difference with football given the decent number of world class players produced in last 30 years. Torres was injured to be fair (and somehow still secured a record move to Chelsea), but Rooney's bad world cup led into the season and he was absolutely terrible for the first half of 2010/11. Even that goal against City, he was horrendous in that game, he even admitted it in the Soccer Box with Gary Neville. Took him a while to get back up to a respectable level. In the March he scored 4 goals over two legs v AC Milan and also Bayern Munich he scored. By March 30th he'd scored 35 goals for club and country so Ronaldo-Messi standard that. I do remember now he got injured right at end of Bayern Munich game. He actually played the second leg but he was rushed back and then in and out for rest of the season. Still played the England warm ups but didn't score at all and floped in a poor england team at that world cup. It's an interesting one with strikers. Most lose that explosive nature by late 20s so have to remodel their game a bit. Raul was another who really stuggled at Real Madrid once he hit 28. Yeah you just reminded me, it was the injury against Bayern and they rushed him back for the WC too quickly.. The CL was so entertaining in those days. Jose was shithousing his way past Barca, and the English teams were really strong at the time. Which made our chase for 4th place that much more exciting. We really fell on our sword trying to reach the promised land. James Milner is another that broke through with Rooney at the same age (I actually think he's a couple of years older) and is still going strong at the very top level. Rooney just didn't take care of himself as he should have. He was built like a shit brick house as a teen. By comparison, Ronaldo was a skinny boy and had to work at his physique and conditioning. Zatman Posted January 16, 2021 Author Share Posted January 16, 2021 I think Torres was mentioned earlier and even Fabregas are similar to Rooney, came in and had lots of hype and had huge pressure on them from 16 and by the time were 30 they had been physically busted because of the club environment they came into. Rooney was only 6 caps off being all time England record in the end aswell.
