Haha Ferrari need a good resurgence on the engine front this season then. Is the freeze from the first race of 2022 or Jan 1st? Hopefully they get the full off season so at least they can create some false hope

Ferrari are already very confident of a big step forward this season which is encouraging to hear. Fingers crossed they can provide a decent engine given they power 30% of the grid.

Problem is everyone else has also made big steps forward

They've identified an issue though so there's reason to be positive. They had more scope for improvement.

Doesn't sound like it's too serious, apparently he is just awaiting a few tests tomorrow but he's feeling well in himself.

Red Bull are taking the Honda engine in house and becoming a works team. It had been rumoured for a while but I thought it was a negotiating tactic, I didn't actually think it would happen.

Well yes and no I suppose.  They're basically getting Honda support for this year and then they're a "works" team for a period where engine development isn't allowed anyway. Then in 2025 for the next generation of engine we'll see what happens.  It's definitely a step in the proper works direction though. It keeps some of the Honda engine staff and sets up the infrastructure that could be used for actual development from 2025 onwards.

Why Red Bull’s exit from F1 customer ranks may be permanent

Why Red Bull’s exit from F1 customer ranks may be permanent

The new Red Bull Powertrains Limited company that will take over the Honda F1 engine programme from the beginning of next year is not just a short-term solution for the current formula, insists Christian Horner, but a permanent long-term development which “puts Red Bull in charge of its own destiny”.

The new company will be based within the team’s Milton Keynes headquarters and will be built up during the remainder of this year, Honda’s final season of official F1 participation.

The plan is to take key personnel from that programme in order to continue to produce and run the power units in the Red Bull and AlphaTauri teams in the remainder of the current engine formula. But Horner admits that there will likely be a recruitment drive in addition to that, particularly with a view to the new power unit regulations, expected for 2025.

So yeah it certainly sounds like Red Bull have the full intention to become their own bona fide engine manufacturer from 2025 onwards and they'll spend the next 4 years building up their new engine company to that end.

Williams to become Alpine’s junior team – report

Williams are reportedly set to become a customer and junior team of Alpine from the start of the 2022 season.

Alpine, the team formerly known as Renault, head into the 2021 campaign with no partnerships with other teams on the grid following McLaren’s decision to use Mercedes engines.

This means that, unlike Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari, they don’t have a team that they can put their academy drivers – Oscar Piastri, Guanyu Zhou and Christian Lundgaard – with to get them into Formula 1.

...............

Reportedly, the partnership will consist of Alpine supplying Williams with engines from 2022 and in return, the British will become a customer outfit, providing seats for whoever junior drivers Alpine want to promote to the grid.

In January, Williams announced that they would be increasing their technical partnership with Mercedes from the 2022 season, with gearboxes and other parts being transferred. If a deal with Alpine has indeed been struck, such a partnership will have to end.

Just noticed the Formula E is on this weekend in Saudi Arabia. In the absence of everything else I might even give it a watch.  I see even Nick Cassidy is doing it this season which will be interesting. He's widely regarded as one of the best single seater racers outside of F1 and many think he should be in F1.
