I think it was the 2-3 when we had 21% possession and two 3 shots. Delph scored his first goal  for us I think. Kozak and Gabby too.

At home it was first game of 2004/05 season. Cole and Vassell the scorers and Peter Crouch made his Southampton debut just to make you feel that little bit older! It used to be a comfortable 3 point home game in the mid 90s.

The extra couple of days rest might do us good, Leeds ran the legs off us Friday, barkley looked knackered but that game might do him good, he needs to get fully match sharp cos he hasn't had quite the game time he'd like. I'm going for a 2-1 villa win, i just feel we're much more solid now and the Leeds game we were a bit short on fitness 2nd half, saying that Leeds will do that to every team they play.

Back to winning ways Sunday is the plan, let's get another run going! UTV

A 9 day gap between matches is like a three month break with the schedule this season. Interesting if we have a longer gap between two games this season. Excluding international breaks I doubt it given FA cup later rounds will be midweek.

Think people are confusing the odd Le Tiss wonder goal against us for a bad run but it was really good from 1995 onwards for a long time:

95/96

Southampton 0-1 Villa

Villa 3-0 Southampton

96/97

Southampton 0-1 Villa

Villa 1-0 Southampton

97/98

Villa 1-1 Southampton

Southampton 1-3 Villa

98/99

Southampton 1-4 Villa (that was game where we had cringy post match celebrations after breaking unbeaten run record)

Villa 3-0 Southampton

After that they started beating us a few times but it still was a mixed record up to their relegation in 2004/05 when we beat them twice (came back from 2 down in the away game to win) but yeah lots of issues v them since they came back up in 2012, usually due to us not being able to cope with whatever front 3 they have out. Shane Long's first goal of the season incoming of course...

I genuinely don't remember many wins against Southampton. The run above surprised me, although those 3 home wins you mention were 20/25 years ago during my heavy clubbing period, so no surprise I forgot them.

I seem to remember loads of scrappy losses and bore draws over the years.

Either way, this game will be very, very tough and I still think a draw would be a great result. If we finish above this lot then I'd be both stunned and delighted.

Tough game, need to keep their front two pairing quiet, we do that we win (easy eh?!)

Even though there are no fans watching, it still makes me feel a little more confident seeing us playing with the claret & blue seats in the background and hopefully the familiarity helps us to victory.

I would start Traore in this one as a replacement for Trez who was v poor against Leeds. It's a bit of a gamble because we may lose a little defensive cover but we're at home, we've had a great start to the season (Leeds aside) and I think we need to attack the game in a positive manner and hopefully Bertrand gives us something extra the other way.

Goes without saying that we need improvement in all areas from last time out, but particularly from Watkins and Barkley - If it is not "happening" then I think we (Dean) shouldn't leave it too late to introduce the likes of Davis & Hourihane.

There will be goals. For both teams. I think we have enough to nick it.🙏

Walcott, I'm not worried about him. We nullified Harvey Barnes against Leicester so we can handle a bit of pace.

In the last 5 years we have not beaten them it has been 4 wins to them and 2 draws.....the last time we beat them was 2-3 away in 2013/14 season.

Furthermore the defeats have been emphatic.....2-0 away, 1-3 at home, 2-4 at home, 6-1 away

They have been able to find an easy way to score against us......I just hope if we do lose, we make them work for it.

I know, shows how fit Leeds are to be fair, I was mainly referring to barkley being up to scratch, but the rest of the team looked knackered aswell.

And all our games seem to have been on Fridays or Sundays, to be fair the way Leeds ran us around we needed a month rest lol 😂

Big game to see where we are mentally. Huge disappointment if we don't see a reaction after our last game.

Not an easy game by any stretch but if we perform like we have, bar Leeds, then we'll take three points.

I think we could say this for most of the established top half premier league teams, certainly before this season. We hadn't beaten Liverpool since 2014 either, and that didn't turn out too badly this time around.😉

If we have our big players fit (which I think they are) and firing (which I hope they will be after 9 days rest) we should be more than good enough to give the Saints a good game/beat them.

We welcome Southampton to Villa Park for a high noon showdown on Sunday. We really need to bounce back after losing our unbeaten run last Friday, if we are not to run the risk of losing the momentum that our great start to this season has given us. We need to ensure that our first defeat of the season, which was also the first time that we had failed to win, can be looked back on as a blip, rather than as the start of a slide down the table.

A win would maintain our position in the top four with a game in hand, but a win may well be as hard to come by as it proved to be last Friday night. The Saints will be a tough nut to crack and they have won on their last two visits to Villa Park by a two-goal margin. It has been 16 long years since we last beat them at Villa Park, so it is high time that we did just that!

Overall, we have won 25 and have drawn 24, of the 70 league games that there have been between the two clubs. We need another clean sheet, and a win might even see us top of the league on Sunday afternoon. Just win it for us Villa! :flag:

They're a decent side with a very good manager, I rate Hassenhuttl highly, but anything less than a point in this game is disappointing. Especially if we have designs on being comfortably midtable this season.

I'd probably take a draw but the aim has to be 3 points. Our record against them in recent years is dire and it's about time we put that right. We also need a positive result and performance following the Leeds shambles.

This will be a very difficult game imo. Southampton really know how to beat us as the record over the last decade shows (ugh it's so dire).

With Ings and Adams firing on all cylinders we really have to be able to deal with this dual threat which I'm sure won't be an easy task. I doubt we'll be able to keep a clean sheet so I feel it's vital that Watkins, Barkley and Grealish are up for it.

Would be happy with a draw tbh.

Huh? Think that's wishful thinking to be honest.

Established PL side who whipped us twice last season.

This would be a fantastic three points to get. And a very good point.

Not wishful thinking really to hope for at least a point against a solid midtable Prem team at home. We've beaten better in Liverpool and Leicester already. Sides like Brighton, Newcastle, Palace and West Ham are supposedly 'established' teams too, but I wouldn't' be happy with a draw against any of those teams at home. We've invested a lot in the team to be able to compete against such teams.

I think if at least the majority of our first 11 perform well then we will take something, at least a draw and possibly even a win. If none of them turn up, as happened against Leeds, then it's curtains again. But I really wouldn't expect a non-performance from the whole team to happen in 2 consecutive games.
