Lord Willard
Attracting good players when we finished 17th must of been so hard. Imagine trying to attract good players if we finish 6th and have Europa football....
ozvillafan Posted January 24, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted January 24, 2021 Goal at start of season: Solidify. Stay out of the relegation scrap and push towards middle table. Goat at half-way: Continue upward trend. Top 6 is anyone's given the form of Arsenal and Chelsea. That's not to say if we finish where we are now we had a bad season - but you adjust your goals based on your performance, otherwise you become complacent
Zhan_Zhuang
I agree, before the the season a top half finish would have been excellent. But where we stand now if we continue to play well and even potentially improve with the acquisition of Sanson maybe 6th could be on. Presumably as low as 8th could be a European place depending on who wins the Cups? Europe would be excellent no doubt about it.
Popular Post Mic09
How can anyone not want Europa League football. I want to see Ajax/Benfica/Celtic/Wolfsburg/Lazio at Villa Park, and I want Jack/Ollie/Traore to play them. If we get Europe, we will probably sign an additional two or three players as well, get extra money, prestige, TV games. We will attract better players. Sure, once to twice we will travel to Belarus or Romania. So what?
Jareth Posted January 24, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted January 24, 2021 Win the next two and it'd be realistic to target the top 4 this season.
PieFacE Posted January 24, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted January 24, 2021 Any type of European football would be fantastic. Not sure it's within our reach tbh. Though, just got to take it one game at a time.

I was of the opinion that it would be too early for us due to squad depth, Cups etc. However I've since changed my stance, as some have said, it would encourage the board to invest, will also strengthen our position in attracting and keeping our best players. Will increase our profile even further, and be a valuable learning experience for our players. Might even allow lads like Ramsey to start getting some exposure? At this point i'm in the it would be better to get it, even if we go out at the first round.
Tayls
I’m very much of the opinion that if we make it into any European competition then we treat it with some respect and play the games properly. Additionally, if we do make it, I very much doubt any of our first team players are going to accept being left out of the matches because we see it is an opportunity to play those who don’t get much game time. We’ve not made it into any European competition for 12 or so years, let’s not take the pissflaps when we do finally make it back in. That drops to 6th if the League Cup is won by a side already in Europe and them 7th if the FA Cup is won by a top 6 side. If an English side wins the Europa League then they go into the CL so even then a European place wouldn't drop to 8th.

Hence the question posed.
Zhan_Zhuang
So seventh then, I was one out. I do beg your pardon. LOL

LOL It's OK, they mess around with it regularly. 8th would be a ridiculously low position to qualify for Europe if you think about it. Even 7th seems absurd.

What do you think is going to hold us back? You have to admit the jump from where we were last season to now, and what we could potentially achieve this season, is pretty huge. I don’t think the expectation was to finish top 6 this season and I think the squad reflects that, in some ways. That’s my interpretation of what was said, and about where I am on it. Hope I am wrong though, would love any form of European footy.

villalad21
If we were in the Europa League and fighting for top 6 in the league I'd rather focus on the league and play the B team in Europa. Like we did under MON

Like we did under MON That was so great - repetitively getting 6th and achieving nothing of note in Europe. What would be even better is not signing Heskey's of this world and fighting to go as high as possible in all competitions. I hope Dean Smith's ambition is the latter.

Making the top 4 is is worth much more than a decent Europa League run. I'd do the same again if i was the coach all those years ago.
