Sergio Romero closing in on Aston Villa switch

Spanish outlet Marca has claimed that Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has picked Aston Villa as his next destination.

After confirming the signing of Matty Cash yesterday from Nottingham Forest, now it seems a deal to bring Romero to Villa Park could be on the cards.

If true, Dean Smith’s side will have seen off competition from numerous Premier League rivals. The report also claims the fee will be an initial €8 million (£7.1m) for the 96 times capped Argentine international.

Romero was on a reported £70,000-a-week at Old Trafford, wages that are unlikely to be matched by the officials at Villa, meaning a compromise must be reached in order to land the stopper but that may not be too big of an issue as with the return of Dean Henderson to Manchester, the Argentine is looking for a way out.

Only seven of Romero’s 61 United appearances have come in the Premier League, although he has proven himself as a capable operator at the top level when called upon.

Smith will be delighted to land the 33-year-old and potentially finally solve the goalkeeping dilemma he has faced since Tom Heaton’s injury.

Pepe Reina finished the season as Smith’s number one, however, the experienced Spaniard joined Lazio following his loan spell in the Midlands, leaving Villa looking elsewhere for a shot stopper.

Sergio Romero has chosen Aston Villa as his next destination

Aston Villa confirmed the signing of Matty Cash yesterday, and it seems they are close to signing Sergio Romero from Manchester United as well.

According to reports from Marca, Villa have agreed a fee with Manchester United to sign the 33-year-old goalkeeper.

The report claims that Villa will pay an initial €8 million (£7.1m) for the 96-cap Argentine international.

Everton were also interested in him, but he has set his heart on joining Aston Villa this summer.

Marca claims that if ‘nothing is complicated’ in the final minutes, then he will be a Villa player shortly.

There were suggestions from The Sun that Aston Villa may struggle to land him at Villa Park because of his wage demands.

Romero is on £70,000-a-week at Old Trafford, and Villa were unwilling to match his wage demands.

However, it seems both the parties are looking to reach a compromise on the wage front, and that a deal has been agreed between the two clubs as well.

He will compete with Tom Heaton for the first-team role at Villa.

Don't see the point in this at 33, would of rather got someone we could develop under Heaton to eventually take over as no.1. Oh well, hope he does well in his 3 games (assuming Heaton comes back okay)

He could be our first choice goalie for 6 years or so if he's good.

I think this is the key bit. Suggests to me that perhaps the hierarchy aren't confident, certainly not of reaching his levels this side of Christmas.

Why? Friedel was still excellent for us at that age and we could develop at least a couple of good young goalies to take over in that time.

Agreed but you get Martinez, Ramsdale or anyone a bit younger and you don't have to worry about that. We'll be looking for a new no.1 within 2 years.

@SeanVilla Well, we are working within a budget with many areas need improving. £18.5m on ramsdale was it? This is £10m cheaper. The idea being we would have £10m to spend elsewhere. We still get a hugely respected and experienced goalkeeper for the cheaper price.

I don't think Martinez wanted to leave, either that or arsenal didn't want to sell.

Yeah but you're comparing a guy who played 450 prem games to someone who's played 7. Just because there's an example of a player who's played at the top level at 39, doesn't mean everyone will do it

Perhaps not but Arsenal are keen on Raya from Brentford, Martinez wants first team football and Leno is very good. So not out of the question.

Most goalies can play at a high level until their late 30s - this is nothing new or unusual. We can get 3 or 4 years out of him no sweat.

We'll have failed massively if we sign a goalkeeper that secures a first choice spot for 6 years?  This seems like an odd metric.

Neither of us know. It appears we have moved on to another target so that's reason enough for me to think that Martinez was unachievable for the correct price.

The idea of the metric is if the best we can do in 6 years is a 39 year old Romero, then somethings gone wrong. Whether that's relegation fodder or Championship. We're not going to be challenging Europe with him, although that's just my opinion
