Men against boys, it was virtually their first team Squad playing for places in the first league game of the season, disappointing but not piss poor. Put a good 18 year old into our first team you would hope he could hold his own surrounded by seasoned pros but eleven youngsters against eleven experienced pros it ain’t going to happen. Disappointing but not piss poor

Exactly. This is why youngsters don't often make it at Villa - the hysterical overreactions of the fanbase when they aren't instantly great aged 18. It's pathetic.

Not even 18.

We beat the Liverpool kids 5-0 last year.

Yet they outplayed us. Nyland was incredible that day. Cruyff would have been proud if those Liverpool kids were his Barca or Ajax youth teams.

Performance is more important than results for kids.

There's a mix there. It's still U21 and there's lads 4/5 years under that. Just a complete waste of time to slag them off considering they played against a very strong, experienced Pro team.

What **** difference does it make?

The difference is what's correct or not. You see I like things to be accurate when forming opinions.

Based on that post above 7/11 players were 18/19 years old. That's a massive difference between a bunch of 17 year olds. At 17 there's lots of room for physical development. At 18-19 you're talking about men. When the result then reflects a boy vs men scenario, it's not something we should pretend doesn't matter. It just points to a lot of these players not being good enough. They didn't meet a full strength championship side or a PL reserve side. They met Sunderland.

It's not a big deal in any way. Big losses happen with youth teams, and especially if there's new players and the team is disorganised. But it's utterly stupid to just avoid talking about how bad an 8-1 loss is.

Just looked at the Leicester U21 team that beat Sunderland last season and they were all in their early twenties, a few of them would have even been over the age of 21, many of them had league experience whilst out on loan, Benkovic who was in defence for them that day had already played over twenty games for Celtic's first team, including in Europe, there's a big difference between playing a side like that and the team we put out last night made up of mostly seventeen year olds who've barely played any U23 football yet.

Southampton, a professional team who finished near the top half, with players worth millions, lost 8-0 to leicester last season.

It. happens. To use it as a stick to beat our prominently very young lads, on what was most of their first competitive game, is **** pathetic.

All the seventeen year olds in our team last night only turned seventeen this year, Chukwuemeka only turned sixteen this year, he still goes to school apparently.

We could have fielded an older and more physically developed team with more experience, that might have given us a better chance on the night, but the club obviously saw more value in playing our better prospects in order to give them the experience, rather waste it on players who chances are we already know aren't going to make it at the club.

Obviously we don't want to lose 8-1, but we aren't so much bothered about results or progressing in this competition, the main thing is giving our best prospects a taste of first team football.
