Matty Cash

A very poor game in that friendly, they went past him like he wasn't there time and time again, and if it wasn't a friendly I think he'd have walked for that bad tackle second half.  I'd be starting Guilbert next week, because Sheffield United will target Cash if he starts.

Based on the highlights he doesn't seem to be a regular start just yet. Sure, the calibre of the opposition was likely the highest he's ever faced (bar maybe a few cup games), but it's clear some time to adapt is needed.

I wouldn't be against him starting against Burton to ease him in, but against sheffield I'd start Freddie over him

I watched the whole match, I thought he was steady, not spectacular. It was his debut, he was bound to be a bit rusty, he will improve, it’s his shirt to lose now I think

Just speculation since I never watched him play at RB but I imagine he's a better RB with the ball than without it?

And I'm not sure we are a team that will have more possession than our opponents in most games. But he's young so hopefully he will improve every aspect of his game when he gets more games against good opponents.

Don't think he is ready yet.

Hope Elmo starts against SU.

We can't afford players to learn their trade for another season. We need to ease them in, bit by bit. Give him a cup game here and another 15-20 minutes there to start with.

I think Smith may well do this. He did start Elmo and Taylor against Tottenham last year amidst fan uproar.

I don't want to be too harsch as it was one of his first games, but that didn't bode well at all.

Imo a full back must first and foremost be able to defend. Cash was found out defensively all game. Only in first 10 mins Man U and James got past him and put dangerous crosses in on 3 or 4 occations. Then it continued like that, I can hardly remember one time that he managed to prevent a ball going in to our penalty area. We were only lucky that Man U didn't score a couple. He was also bailed out by Konsa on several of those occations. Compare that with how few times Targett let them put a cross in. And when Elmo came on I didn't see one cross coming in from that side (although at that time Man U had a weaker team should be said). His booking was silly and a sign of desperation of being found out or second to the ball many times. He also had a couple of dodgy clearences.

He didn't contribute much in attack either, Elmo putting more crosses in during his short cameo.

What was positive with Cash was that he looked fast, looked like he had his head switched on and looked like he wanted to do more and improve, it wasn't a Joe Bennett debut. It could be as simple as that he needs to adjust to the pace of the game, and obviously needs to form an understanding with his team mates on the right hand side. He is young and will improve. He also showed flashes of quality with his passing, where Elmo often just puts it in the channel or others wacks it away, it looked like he has the ability to pick out a good pass, like Targett has. So I have good hope of him coming good.

But on the whole he has some way to go based on that performance. Elmo and Guilbert are ahead of him for now imo..

I don't know how much money we have to spend, but must reiterate that I'm not sure how wise it was to spend that much money on a position that we don't really need to improve on when we have far more pressing positions where we need reinforcements. And by the first look of it, we haven't yet improved on the position. No doubt he can be a class player for us, but we need instant upgrades on our first 11 right now.

I'm so thankful we have Elmo.

Such an underappreciated player on here.

I'm sure Cash can learn lots from him.

Fully agree, I think Elmo is a specialist RB, a proper player in that position with a lot of experience, and has a sweet cross in him as well. Hopefully he can teach Cash to become a proper RB as well.

I wouldn’t say Elmohamady is a specialist right back, he can play at right wing too

I am not sure at this stage of his career he would have the legs for that, unless you were setting up the team to be George Graham defensive.

He seemed to be doing alright when called upon post covid break.

We literally wouldn't be playing in this league without his contributions. His Newcastle goal for instance.

Would start him tonight, wouldn't start him against Sheffield United.

He can learn a great deal from Elmo, and expect he'll be our right back for many years to come once he's settled and got up to speed with the league.

For now, for me, Guilbert would keep the starting place in the league, but looks like Smith has other ideas.

Right back has become our deepest position - we have Cash who has been signed to start there, Guilbert who like most of you I really like, Elmo who is an experienced reliable back up and Kesler who might be the brightest prospect in the club right now.

I think Cash needs time on the pitch with the rest of the team to help him settle in - which is a pity because on theory Burton tonight should be an opportunity for one of the others - but they might have to miss out so he can get up to speed.

Any news on whether Matty Cash is fit enough to start the game tomorrow?

No mention of an injury in Friday's briefing to the media. Bought the kid to play. Put him in. If anything, the current environment with the pandemic is almost a good thing for a new signing arriving to a club with a big fan base and ordinarily a large home attendance. It's football in its purest form. You get to focus on the game. For a newcomer, that has to be a good thing.
