Interesting to see where they're planning to field candidates. When elections become about a single issue for a lot of people and there's only really one party addressing this it does distort the entire system. If they split the independence vote this can really only be good for the tories *shudder*.

I have little knowledge of the current standings in Scottish constituencies but surely the same logic applies to Labour as both have lost huge amounts of voters to the SNP?

I'm by no means an expert but a lot of the rise of the SNP has been attributed to former Labour voters switching to SNP...they basically stole their clothes and wrapped themselves in a saltire to boot. I guess it's possible those left-leaning people might switch back to Labour but I would think a lot of them have made minds up about the independence question and that would make it unlikely in my view.

The Tory vote on the other hand has always been pro-union and they've been able to do better in recent times by being a magnet for those of that tribe. Anything to split the main bloc of voters is good for all the other parties I guess but Labours problem is they're competing to take votes back from the nationalists.

I just had a quick look at the Glasgow constituencies in the 2019 elections, Labour is in second place in every single one of them. If the SNP vote vote splits significantly, they could be back in in all of them

Alex Salmond forms new Alba Party splitting from SNP and they will run in the May Scottish Parliament elections.

Splitters!

It's quite funny that the party has a Gaellic name, but Salmond is already mispronouncing it, which isn't a great look. It should be closer to A-Luh-Ba apparently, not Al-Ba.

It would be like Plaid Cymru leaders pronouncing it Cim-Ru.

Almost as bad as misspelling it ;)

Bit sneaky of the SNP to wrap themselves in the saltire.

The problem is, I think Labour fell in to a trap of criticising ‘nationalism’ by going overtly ‘British nationalist’. They rarely (to my ears) praise unionism as such, as I think they probably have a guy feeling that’s tory territory. So they go anti Scottish Nationalist. To an awful lot of people that comes over as British Nationalist, which i know isn’t strictly a thing, which actually just makes it doubly flawed.

As a tactic, well, they last won an election in 2003, so perhaps they need a rethink.

They had a bloody good go at personalising the election and making it about Sturgeon. Which has worked to some extent, first time in ages that pro indie hasn’t been in the majority. So perhaps that’s what they’ll double down on. Personality politics. Risky when your leader is Starmer down in that Westminster.

Only for a moment, before realising that as someone under 40 I know what Google is.

This Northern Independence Party seems to be getting a bit of buzz on left wing twitter. I can see the appeal as an alternative to a centrist Labour Party, and it is amusing to right wingers flapping, but ultimately as a socialist I can't see the merit in more division of the working class. My idea of socialism is one that helps all of the working class, not even just in the UK. Looking out for workibg people in Hackney and Hamilton, as much as in Hartlepool. Also as much as I still have inner turmoil over my Labour Party membership, I can only see this being a problem for them in the North, and ultimately cementing the Tories blue wall.

Very frustrating that they chose to frame a left-wing critique of Starmerism as yet another independence/secession movement IMO.

Yeah and ultimately I see myself a fairly Northern now (having moved north from Birmingham 20 plus years ago), but I'm still also a Brummie, which isn't the North. The idea of Northern independence isn't something that I've ever had a burning desire to see, although I suspect neither have a lot of the people involved. I think the reality is a lot of people have jumped on this as an FU to Starmer.
