Jack got surrounded because teams knew they didn’t really need to worry about marking anyone else. If we had two genuine wide threats in addition to Jack then either he gets more time and space in the middle, or the forwards get a lot more space to attack from the flanks.

The problem isn’t Jack playing centrally, it’s a lack of other creative outlets.

We got walked through. The defence couldn't cope the other 2 in the middle couldnt cope.

Unless you are expecting 2 players in the middle to try and win everything and move it on ? In which case neither luiz mcginn or anyone else we currently have are capable of playing that way. So we would also need 2 cm players as well as 2 wide men and a forward.

I disagree, it’s an accumulation of factors.

Better players up front means our attacks don’t breakdown so regularly through misplaced passes, putting central midfield under so much pressure as they scramble to transition back into defence.

Better players means being able to press higher and break down attacks higher up the pitch, relieving pressure on the central midfield.

I agree we need another specialist DM to really make it work against strong teams, but for my money Luiz is more than good enough to fill one of two positions.

It might mean SJM having to work harder on that side of his game and that’s fine. If he’s on the bench, fine. We’ll set up differently for different opponents, we desperately need more tactically flexibility and the personnel to enable that.

Finally, in terms of defensive play I remember watching Jack track back from the opposition box to our own, win the ball and then carry it upfield again. I don’t buy the argument that he doesn’t put the effort in defensively. No he won’t win aerial battles in midfield very much, but that’s not really his job - imo.

Edit: also, Edouard. Great player!

We were porous in central midfield when McGinn wasn't there and before Luiz started to look the part. Once you'd got those 2 in there on form we were fine. Playing the way we do the only position for Grealish is that central attacking midfield, if we changed to a 4-4-2 with a more authodox midfield he could potentially play in behind the number 9, which i think would be his best position.

As pointed out, if we sign some better players for the 3 forward positions, it will give the opposition more to think about taking the pressure off the rest of the team. With Trezeguet, Samatta, El Ghazi, Jota and to a lesser extent Wesley no one had the ability to keep hold of the ball for long, it kept bouncing back and putting the midfield back under pressure.

For me, we need 3 new attackers for those positions, another good centre mid to compete with Luiz and McGinn and 2 new full backs as i'm not convinced by any of the ones we have.

We’ll not be getting Elphick back.

I hope we do sign him. He is only 22 and he has so much finesse already. Been in the French youth set up to.

I know it's a lazy argument but the defending in this video is absolutely comical.

He can take set pieces as well, when was the last time we had a forward who could?

Mginn was the issue early in the season he was always out of position and it was just grealish with Luiz/Nakamba/Hourihane defending. It happened every game. Mcginn is a talented player but the way he has been played by Smith makes him a liability and I would rather not play him

It is. I mean you can forgive the kids in the international stuff because they're kids but some of the Scottish stuff is woeful.

It isn't about the defending it is about whether a better keeper would save those shots and most of them look pretty unstoppable to me. He would score for whoever he signs for. Hopefully us.

He’s got great technique & footwork, makes a change from our other strikers.

I just don’t think Davis & Samatta are even close to good enough and Edouard should be a massive improvement on both of them.

Samatta should be 3rd choice at best, Davis doesn’t score and you can only wait so long for players to improve at this level. We desperately need goalscorers. I keep reiterating that we can’t afford to carry any passengers if we actually want to compete in the PL (rather than struggle to survive), ineffective players is what hurt us this season most of all.

The most encouraging thing about Edouard is how much promise and potential he’s already showing at such a young age, plenty of goals (and assists too, which is great). He completely fits the kind of profile we have been looking for (young, high potential, capacity for high profit if sold in future).

If we’re in for Watkins too, I’m sure that would be a huge upgrade on Samatta & Davis who I would have no qualms about us moving on.

Wesley will be like a new signing and different option when he returns and will have to up his game to compete with that pair. 3 good striking options there, that would make a nice change for us.

The amount of upgrading & improvement this squad needs is a fairly huge task...

I‘m hopeful we can get the right players in but it’s going to take a lot to make us a mid table team rather than a relegation battler.

That first signing or two will give us an idea of which way we are heading...
