Hans Krankl, After the 1978 World Cup he was set to sign for us according to the tabloids for a fee of £400,000 He signed for Barcelona instead and went on and scored 34 goals in 46 games in his first season winning the equivalent of the golden boat back then

His feet must have been massive!

Paul Robinson was all set to join from Leeds when O'Leary took over too. Think we were quite heavily linked with quite a few Leeds players that summer.

Ex leeds chairman peter risdale's book disputes this, he said a bid was made but Robinson had no intention of playing under DOL after being together at leeds

liked it when we played against Robinson - he always had a bit of fun with the crowd!

There was the photo of Klass Jan Huntelaar sitting in the stands (was just some random punter).

He has always been Klaus von Hunterlinger to me ever since.

Haim Revivo from Celta Riga

Jose Bosingwa, before Chelsea bought him.

When we were linked with Sneijder, we were also linked with some of the Dutch youth world cup winning team I think? Drenthe and Babel come to mind

Going back some years, Steve Bull was linked every summer for a few years.

Juninho - think he spoke to Villa but the move broke down over personal terms

Abebayor - As soon as Sherwood came, he was linked and think he met us as well.

Other names - Belhanda, Hoolahan and Kiyotake

Steve Bull was done but for a medical, he'd even got a little graphic done on his car Steve Bull - Aston Villa... A friend of his from the day told me, something on medical wasn't right, so Doug tried to haggle a bit more.

Was reading Brian Little's book. Said Doug invited Danny Blind over just after euro 96. Gave him a tour of Brum and VP and first time Brian met him was in the VP boardroom! Had no idea we were interested and said there was no room in his squad. A few months later we let McGrath go to Derby and had injuries at the back so he'd have been a useful pick up for a season or two.

Wasn't Roberto Carlos linked in summer 1995?

Wasnt there a story he was all but set to sign for us, and met Doug before signing and Beattie was completely **** off with Doug telling stories all about himself so he went to Everton instead?

We tried to put relegation clauses in his contract, not the best sales pitch.

Gary Lineker, he went to spurs instead. The reason was he would cost 1 million or whatever and would have taken our entire summer budget.

Sigh.

Just Google checked... it was eveton he went to not spurz.

Then O’Dreary realised he wasn’t going be be able to spend real money haha! I hated him managing us. 'Honest bunch of lads' got on my nerves week in week out!
