Tough for the lad, ACLs are not nice injuries and will be a year before he's back to his best probably. Hopefully back before then but will be an extended time out for sure.

Edit: removed question around a previous injury, had confused him for another player

how common are ACL injuries at such a young age?

Are ACL injuries more likely as you age?, or are they just.....any time, anywhere?

My best friend did his ACL whilst in the Ajax academy, think he was fifteen years old. Totally finished him.

Yeah I think it's possible anytime, any age.

I coached American football & now real football at the high school (14–18-year-old range). They happen a lot more than people realize. Usually a year out -- and I have a student, currently even 4-5 months after surgery, can't do athletic games because of the injury. Of course, every injury is different & unique for each individual.

But the reality is an ACL injury can happen almost anytime.

Carlos was an achilles injury

Still with plenty of complications in terms of returning as-was, but better on the spectrum versus an ACL.

Although with all ligament injuries, it depends on the severity of course.

As you specialise in sports they become more and more common as you don't develop your muscle groups equally.

If you do a lot of plyometrics and the like you can often develop muscles far too strong for your ligaments and joints and injure yourself like that.

I’ve done my ACL twice playing rugby and the surgeon told me it was traditionally a footballer’s injury (or from skiing).

It’s the ligament that supports the knee when it’s twisting / rotating sideways - I originally did mine when my foot basically got rotated 180 degrees to be facing backwards (my knee stayed in the same place) so it’s that sort of motion.

I don’t think this specific type of injury is something that can be caused by overstrong muscles because it’s not a motion that the body naturally makes, if that makes sense?

As a CB he'll probably be fine so long as his game revolves around reading the game, intelligence etc.

In NFL, if a Running Back gets an ACL injury, there's a chance they may never be the same again, and in most cases they would be back bit-part 1 year later and not really back to their best for 2 years.

As a CB I'd imagine he'd be fine, so long as his major attributes aren't pace, agility etc. And as he looks about 9ft tall at such a young age I'd assume thats not the case for him

my lad finished playing in local football with Osgood-Sclatter disease....that was quite depressing to find.

They say its caused by too much football, too young.

He's looked just as good as any of our defenders at U21 level other than Feeney, and truth be told probably looked just as good defensively as Feeney, he's Dutch youth international, I'm pretty sure he captained their U18s or U19s recently, and has been unlucky with injuries. So I'd be surprised if we let him go, again even if it's going to be hard for him to make it with us, he has a good chance of making it at a decent level somewhere else, so will be looking to develop him and sell on for a fee, or if he does break into our squad even better.

One of the big shames of his injury is that we probably would have looked to send him out on loan this coming summer, but now might be harder to find him a club after missing half a season.
