Vancvillan
As long as VAR rules out their first goal we'll do them.
Popular Post John
Games don't get much bigger than this one. A win would take us, to just a point behind both Watford and West Ham, when they meet on Friday. It would give us our third away win and our second double, of the season. Given that Bournemouth are at Manchester City on Wednesday, it is reasonable to hope that we will start Thursday's game, with the opportunity of moving two points ahead of them as well. We just have to win this one! We beat Everton 2-0 at Villa Park 11 months ago, in what was our third game of this season. We need to win this one as well, so that we can have real hope of climbing out of the bottom three, in the two remaining games that follow this one. Ancelotti will have made it very clear, that he won't tolerate another inept performance like their last one, so let's hope that his players ignore that and are still on New Brighton beach, when they line up against us. I doubt that they will be, so we will need to fight like lions for our safety, at an empty Goodison Park. We last won at Everton in 2008. Following that, we drew our next four games there, and have now lost on our last three visits. We last did the double over them in season 2000/2001, so it's high time that we did one again. We have had some great wins up there. The 3-1 win back in 1981, would take some beating, but any win tomorrow, would run it close! Overall, in the most played league fixture, we have won 74 and have drawn 53 of the 203 league games that there have been between the two clubs. Let's hope that we will be playing this fixture again next season! We managed a win and a clean sheet on Sunday. We also scored two, yes two goals. That will have given us some much needed confidence as well as restored a little pride. It showed that we might yet fight our way out of the mess, that we've got ourselves into, against all of the odds. This game won't be easy, Villa don't do easy. This will be another cup final. Fortunately, we do rather well in cup finals against our hosts, having beaten them in 1977 and 1897, 3-2 on both occasions. Let's make this a third cup final win! Make mine a double tomorrow. Just win this one for us Villa! Edited July 15, 2020 by John

alreadyexists Posted July 15, 2020 VT Supporter Share Posted July 15, 2020 (edited) I did worry that the West Ham v Watford game will be a 0-0 procession that essentially secures them both... or can that not happen with a draw? villalad21
I do have huge respect for Everton as a football club. Big and proper club with a great stadium and fan base. Their fans do not suffer from the inferiority complex syndrome like most of the lesser clubs who for one reason or another can't stand us. Doing the double over them would be a good achievement. Looking forward to the game. Hope they are in beach mode! My head says 1-1. My heart says 1-
BleedClaretAndBlue
So no Yerry Mina, probably Keane and Holgate to play for them. Thats a chance in itself for us to get at them. Their midfield is a weakness for them and a strong suit for us. We can win that battle. Their forwards will be the threat we need to be focused. Feel more comfortable with Mings and Konsa at center half, adds natural balance rather than Hause playing at RCB needing to go onto his left foot all the time slowing our snailpace football down further. If Jack and John can produce a performance they’re capable of when we need it most then this is very much winnable. Have no reservations anymore over Doug controlling things, been immense lately. Trezeguet with new found confidence looking to get on the end of chances now bodes well. Just need Davis or Samatta to get one now to boost them for the last few games. Everton I would say are a great opponent right now when you need to get something. We have a chance here. Think it will be a big mental confidence boost for Smith too if he can take the scalp of a big name like Ancelotti and outthink him. Please Villa, give us hope.
sir_gary_cahill
My team for this match would be: (feel free to criticise or correct!) Nyland Guilbert Konsa Mings Targett McGinn Luiz Hourihane Trezeguet Samatta Grealish Subs: Steer, Elmohamady, Hause, Taylor, El Ghazi, Nakamba, Davis
PieFacE Posted July 15, 2020 VT Supporter Share Posted July 15, 2020 Think we'll play well but ultimately lose 2-0. Lack of a decent striker will be our downfall in this game imo.

villalad21
I very much look at this as a one legged Quarter Final. Lose and we are out of the tournament. Edited July 15, 2020 by villalad21

Effectively a must win, and we just wanted it more. Remember a young Jack embarrassing one of their defenders that day. Yes I was sat right by that in The Whitton Lane stand. He basically put an Everton player on his arse with some footwork, literally stopped raised his hand to his mouth to giggle then played on. On 13/07/2020 at 17:29, BleedClaretAndBlue said: Grealish due a goal It is time for him to score. He needs to stop all this slowing down nonsense. I want to see him cut inside and curl one into the corner, move it to the side in the middle of the park to make some space and smash it in. Shimmy into the box and slide one under the keeper. We need him to come to the table now. He's got it all and we desperately need it. No more receiving the ball and slowing to a walking pace, get at them Jack. villa89
A win would make things interesting but I can't see it happening sadly.
alreadyexists Posted July 15, 2020 VT Supporter Share Posted July 15, 2020 I think I would line up the same as against Palace, the actual line up without Hause, but with Targett instead of Taylor Reina Elmo Konsa Mings Targett Luiz Hourihane McGinn Trez Samatta Grealish Trez has earned a start, even if he isn’t the best his confidence will be up, and then can swap for El Ghazi (who often seems better coming on later or after a break of games) if ineffectual Last chance saloon again, come on Villa.

We’ll get beaten if they do. Oh no, of course they can't, they need to be level headed and prepare for a tough game. But reality is, we have an opportunity to get a huge and unexpected shot at survival. This is the easiest game left on paper for us, a side with nothing to play for.
