And from a purely selfish point of view, if you are in a supermarket and maybe they don’t have all the things you want, just maybe stop and ask the store colleague how they are.  The best and worst of humanity is being shown at this time but it seems the worst is in supermarkets and it could be somebody’s daughter who has been working for at least 12 hours per day that you are abusing.

I did this at my local tesco just now and i thanked them for their help. The looks on their faces told me that it was something they hadn't heard too often lately.

Shame on us selfish, ungrateful morons.

The supermarket I use, I tend to know everyone working there as I used to work there myself. A few years ago. I can tell you this kind of comment would've been worth all the work. Retail seems like a thankless task at the best of times... So to receive a thanks would literally make people's day.

My mum did it in another supermarket, and the response was cracking. The guy walked away with the biggest smile on his face and told a group of workers stood at the end of the aisle. It's easy enough to do. They may not seem as important as nurses etc, but they will help keep your cupboards full. Say 'thanks' once in a while. It doesn't hurt. 👍

I have a question. I was due to start a new job on Monday, but last week the company withdrew the offer saying that we will stay in touch and I can start when this mess is over. It seems that all the support that is available is being handed out via business rather than direct to the population. Does this mean I'm screwed now and will miss out on all the financial support?

Possibly. It's unfortunate, but nothing you can do.

If you can do so, you can ask the company to employ you and then sack you (because of the virus) so that you can get the support - maybe they would do that.

So my cupboards now look like i have been some sort of panic buying loon, couple of people from work have been round & dropped a pile of stuff off & some other family turned up with a boot full. There is probably more uncle bens microwave rice here than in some shops 😕 All very much appreciated but it looks a bit rediculous. Actually managed to find an asda delivery slot for wednesday & had ordered a bunch of stuff but will cancel it now so hopefully someone else can get some stuff :)

My parents are in Kidderminster and are in their 80s.  I'm up near Manchester.

Mom's pretty good with the internet so managed to do an online grocery shop for the first time this week, but there was stuff missing - like pasta.

She said they've got a reasonable amount of food in, but she's more worried about when they only need a few bits rather than a whole grocery order...

We booked our slot 3 weeks ago as normal - however we got a text this morning to say delivery is cancelled due to staff shortages - i went to shop this morning at tesco but no eggs , bread , frozen goods , even cat food and tins were empty - hopefully everyone gets through this - we must all put our health first if possible and stay home if we can

So I have a conundrum, and I think it fits in here, time of need.

We have had a self employed decorator planned to start this Wednesday, painting the internals of the house.  I am not sure we should still be doing it, but the good lady is on the “supporting local business” especially those self employed path.

is the position with government allowance for self employed any clearer or should we be supporting the self employed by getting him in.

Thanks

This is a great question and one that is going to get harder to answer as the weeks go on. We’d all agree that you’d let someone fix a blocked toilet, repair a leaking roof or repair a gas leak. But what about more marginal choices? For instance - Annual servicing of gas appliances?  You can do without it in 99% of the cases. But what’s the biggest risk? CV19 or gas leaks?

Hmmmmmm.......::

Very noble supporting the self employed at this time but for me, I am only spending money on essential stuff at the minute and anything non urgent can wait. Decorating would be non essential in my eyes and i'd rather have the money in my account in this uncertain time.

Yes having a decorator round now is a very bad idea imo.  Hopefully there will be some help announced for the self-employed pretty sharpish though perhaps you could pay him some money in advance as a sort of deposit if you have some to spare?

Bit late for this possibly but I was watching a Martin Lewis video earlier where this scenario came up. His advice was to ask your old employer to take you back and put you on furlough if they can.

I can try to help in the Portsmouth or South Hampshire area if anyone is in desperate need of supplies. We're all in this together :)

Hey trekka, I might need to take you up on this in the near future if the offer is still out there?
