Aston Villa have filed their financial records for 2019, announcing total losses of £68.3m, a £30m increase from the previous year - but remain insistent they are compliant with Financial Fair Play regulations

Promotion saw the new owners having to make a £30m payment to former owner Randy Lerner, a clause that Tony Xia's Recon group defaulted on in May 2019.  That was settled on July 12, 2019, by the company’s ultimate parent, NSWE SCS, who made a capital injection of £30m.

Excluding one-off exceptional items, like the payment to Lerner and bonuses paid to players (£15.8m), the club made an operating loss of £84m, this is up from the 2018 loss of £54m – a record for a Championship club.

The club appear to have received £36.4m for the sale of Villa Park to NSWE and had a payment of £14.494m as HS2 compensation, bringing their total operating loss to £68.3m, up from £35.1m in 2018

Try going there and just clicking on the first pdf. Sorry about the big link.

So for me there are a few things that stand out/I probably don't understand:

  • Our assets have gone up from £19m to £55.8m even though we've sold the stadium and land. What is it we own that got so much more valuable? It's stated in the accounts that the players bought this summer will be in next years accounts so it's not them.
  • We've been specific in the accounts that our forecasts will see us meet Premier League FFP requirements, we've omitted mention of the EFL FFP requirements - given the numbers in these accounts and the previous ones, it's hard to see how we could meet those requirements if we went down other than by big player sales - that means selling Jack for the benefit of the books, not for the benefit of rebuilding.
  • We paid Randy £30m due to him from Xia but picked up by the club for promotion and also paid £13m+ on promotion bonuses to other staff and players.
  • We sold the stadium for £36.3m and the land at Bodymoor to HS2 for £14.5m which paid for those bonuses and helped us a lot.
  • Christian Purslow picks up about half a million pounds a year.
  • We spent £131.9m in the summer on players

Revenues are interesting - I've done a bit of rounding up and put in brackets some wild guesses on this years

  • Gate money - £12.75m (£16m)
  • TV Revenue - £22.25m (£125m)
  • Sponsorship - £7.25m (£14m)
  • Commercial - £12.00 (£18m)

That huge jump in incomes will just about cover the player spend in the summer - but I can still see us making a small loss on 2019-2020.

What all of that suggests is that if we were relegated, we'd need to make a profit of around £70m in our first year in the Championship to continue to meet EFL FFP requirements - even given the parachute payments.

For every loss in this years accounts, and there are some huge losses - there's an equal and relative investment from our owners - we're in very good hands and they are banging in the money we need to establish ourselves regularly and reliably.

But from what I can understand of it, the underlying message is clear on these accounts: Don't get relegated.

Disagree.  Harry Maguire nearly cost that alone.  We got what we paid for in general.

If youu compare every signing to Harry Maguire pretty much near any signing you make wouldn't look like a bad signing. You could do the opposite and compare to some transfer steals too and now every other transfer looks shitty.

Not really comparing signings to his ability.  Its more, an average premiership player these days is 20-30mill plus wages.  We didnt spend that to often.

We had to cut our cloth accordingly.  Our player expenditure could have been alot higher

Only about £200-210m or so spent on player wages over 3 years in the Championship :hooray:

That's pretty modest right.

And the wage cap they are discussing now for the EFL is a £20m/season :crylaugh:

No millions to spend...

Exactly.

I actually don't think that we would lose a great deal on the players we purchased should we decide to sell them all. Trez would have to go cheap and, currently, we would struggle to get much back on Wes. On the other hand a few have increased in value. I would say all the players signed in the summer, bar Trez and Jota, have had games where they look like proper Premier league players. The issue is getting them all to perform like that at the same time and regularly.

If we go down we will have to sell the likes of Jack and Tyrone in order to balance the books but, in theory, we will have some young players with enough quality to give us a good chance of returning quickly and this time with a much more solid base on which to build.

The average price spent per player in the Premier League this season excluding loans and free transfers is actually 16mil so I think that 20-30mil figure is overstated. In general though, outside the top 6, I think most fans would treat signings beyond the 20mil range as important signings and not expect just some average PL player.

In fact, 9 different PL clubs didn't even spend more than 20mil on a player this season, and that 16mil figure is mostly driven by the astronomical figures of the top clubs. It seems a bit odd to claim that 20-30mil is the average for a PL player when almost half the clubs in the leaguue never spent more than 20mil for a single player, implying that half the clubs in the league didn't even buy players that were expected to be average this season.
