Would loved to have got doucoure in, but looks like Everton will announce that transfer later today

I wanted him early in the window then people on here introduced me to Weston McKennie....

I can't see it though with Nakamba in the squad, and espcially as Luiz seems to be really thriving there. I would actually prefer a more attacking midfielder. I would be happy with Swift at the right price if we are spending big in attack and GK.

I would have one of them as well.....but Dougie could do that.

For me, they are specialist positions.......Its not like having an attacking midfielder, instead of a Defensive midfielder, you need both.

for me, its like having an old fashioned half back or wing half.....they are more robust and durable, attacking midfielders are more pacy and lithe, with quick feet and quick brain......2 different positions for me.....but what happens sometimes is general midfielders just get given the role and it only works to a degree....I was really disappointed when Steven Nzonzi never came in Jan, I think it would have been less stressful, if he had.

Ps An attacking midfielder plays with more confidence when he knows there is a player behind him to pick up lost balls.....its a great bit of insurance that creates composure.

I've been watching all kinds of YouTube videos about strikers we've been linked to this summer and the only other player Watkins immediately reminds me of is Tammy.  Scores the same kinds of goals, has pace, strength, and the desire to get on the end of a cross and get he ball into the net. He'll be coming to us full of confidence and I think that if we can sign a pacy winger to play on the right, we'll be able to hit teams on the break this year.

This is unpopular but I kind of concur with a poster from yesterday.

I genuinely think Watkins has a higher ceiling than Tammy.

He sounded just the job.

those tap ins........you have to be there.

It demonstrates an ability to read the play.

This, this and this.

We were crying out for a clinical striker who could get on the end of hopeful (and occasionally quality) balls into the box. Trez did it two or three times and it made scoring look easy.

It's a genuine ability to read the game - yet people seem to think it's just luck.

Wilmar Barrios (26) at Zenit

Mikel Merino  (24) at Real Sociedad

Both would be attainable wage structures and should cost around £25m... they are both units as well!

Also never played in England so as much (if not more) of a gamble for probably the same money.

Apologies, I'd forgotten that period of time when he scored 1 goal in 24 appearances... although fair enough he was 21. Still a gamble that he'd settle as it looks a lot like he didn't settle first time round

Mikel Merino would be our second best player by an absolute country mile! Not that he'd come to us - he just started in midfield for Spain the other day. So much BS spoken about PL experience on here. You'd swear there were no good foreign players in the league

As I said in my original post, I'm not saying we should've signed those players (though looking at Leeds' business I feel we could've nabbed one or two). My point is that they're all far better/more established players than Watkins, yet we're paying substantially more. That makes no sense from a business perspective

We also don't know what the add-ons are for, so I don't agree with your first point either! They could be appearance-related, and, costing was he does, he'll be playing ahead of Samatta and Davis no matter what, I'd imagine

Fair enough on the value for money view then. I guess I picked on your post to reply to as I know it wasnt a wind up attempt. I think we have to accept that the selling club set the price and the only way it wasnt being met is if it reached the end of the window and they'd had no other offers. We couldn't afford to wait that long so paid the premium.

Leeds got helder Costa thanks to having loaned him previously and Rodrigo is 29. They're taking a short term approach to survive which is perfectly acceptable to me. We got lucky in surviving last season buying players that will appreciate in value,  but having done so it gives us the chance to improve sustainably,  and signings like Rodrigo would have us back in the dark days.

Accept some of the extra will be due to appearances, but alot will be performamce and international appearance related

To the people who keep banging on about Leeds signing the like of Rodrigo, 29, on 120 k per week, with little to no resale value.

What happens if Leeds don't stay up?

We aren't taking risks with our future to impress fans like us who just want a cool blockbuster name to brag to their mates about.

If BOTH us and Leeds went down, who do you think is more f*cked?

Watkins is young, will be on manageable wages, and what if he turns out to be better value than Rodrigo?

We are still building our foundation, and can't just look at other clubs in envy as difficult as that may be.

We can consolidate this year, and maybe take risks next year when we have a little less to lose.

I'd rather look at Wolves model if I were to look at anything.

Our realities are not the same as those clubs.
