We need the back three to be really active in pushing up.

Luiz was so high v Leicester it was worrying, Marvellous was on full Kante-mode so we were OK, but it's requiring him to be live up to his name for 90 mins solid.

Aggression to go and meet midfielders when they do pick it up is vital. Fred is excellent at it, too keen if anything the little nutcase.

Can't let them turn and run at us, if they're spare Konsa and Hause need to quickly be right up almost alongside Marv engaging strikers dropping off/midfielders that have found space.

My side for this match would be: (feel free to correct or criticise me)

Reina

Konsa Mings Hause

Guilbert Drinkwater Nakamba Targett

El Ghazi Samatta Grealish

Subs: Nyland, Chester, Elmohamady, Taylor, Lansbury, Trezeguet, Davis

I think the only positions up for question assuming everyone fit are

Reina vs Nyland (Reina if calf ok)

Luiz vs Drinkwater (Luiz earned start after Cup game)

Samatta vs Davis (both will see minutes. Smith may decide start Davis)

AEG vs Trez (I prefer AEG threat)

so bloody nervous...they're such a jammy side and i really think this could be just one of those when they blag a win. 1-0 bournemouth...but hope i'm wrong

We gave them a jammy win last time.  I'm hopeful that serves as sufficient motivation not to do it again.

If you use the home/away league tables to judge our next 3 opponents, we have the 'easiest' run in the league.  Away to 17th in the home league Bournemouth, home against 13th in the away league Spurs & away to bottom of the home league Southampton.

I do think Luiz is far more effective (and less of a risk to us defensively) when he is further up the pitch. He's good on the ball and can pick a pass. Those traits get nullified when he's sat back too deep as there's very little time on the ball when we're being penned back deep. When we counter i feel Luiz is a useful outlet for us and carries the ball well and can spread the right passes.

I’d favour starting Luiz and Nakamba for this one, I think they’ve earned another go after Leicester. The doubt comes when you wonder whether they can do it again, they’ve both been inconsistent, as have most of the team to be fair. We could do with some consistency in selection, we have it at the back now so let’s get the midfield sorted. We have some options off the bench with Drinkwater and Conor, depending how the game pans out. We’re in a nice little bit of form, I pray to Paul McGrath that we win this one too. If beating the crisp packets and getting to Wembley doesn’t give us a boost, nothing will.

We owe these dirtbags.

They kicked the shit out of McGinn and Grealish in the match at home. Billing should have had 4 yellows in the first half.

Yep. Howe gets talked about for his good football, but they are one of the dirtiest sides I have seen.

Luiz is getting into his groove, Drinkwater hasn’t found his yet. I would put Drinkwater on the bench.
