As expected, Brum lockdown rules increased.

Like anybody is going to be able to fathom what it actually means.

It's bonkers.

I can't go round and see the in-laws for a cuppa but I can meet them at the pub or restaurant for a pint and a meal. So nice of the virus to only target us at home not when you're out and about or at work.

No you can't see your nan, but you WILL go sit in a cramped office with dozens of people from all over the region, having crammed into a bus or train to get there.

If you ever needed proof that tories care more about money than peoples lives look no further.

Bit of luck really, just imagine if it had of been a couple of weeks ago, people wouldn't have been able to get away on holiday! 🙄😷

It is quite depressing looking at the latest figures.  Down here the cases are still relatively quite low (but rising) and we've already had warnings from work that the winter may be a tough period (no shit, Sherlock).

Is there any idea where these spikes are originating from? Is it pubs/restaurants and the EOTHO scheme by any chance?

Probably all of those but theres no doubt that the relaxation of measures too quickly has caused this. Hospital admissions are starting to rise too. Need to put the breaks on very quickly else we could be where France are in a week or two.

The new rule is so simple, only the health minister can **** it up. Rule of 6. It's easy. you can only socialise with 6 people. No mate. You can only socialise with 5 people. If you could socialise with 6 other people, it'd be the rule of 7 you **** halfwit.

This is a quick interesting read from a University of Oxford academic (there are graphs, it must be right!).

At the same time as the scheme was operating, the UK started to see an uptick in COVID-19 cases. This overwhelmed testing capacity and caused some regions to reimpose restrictions.

It’s impossible to know what caused this: people were also coming back from summer holidays and spending more time with friends. Indeed, transmission rates were already creeping up in early August, before there could have been any effect from the Eat Out scheme. But the rapid acceleration in the proportion of detected positive cases at the start of September is consistent with cases where infection occurred in mid-August.

It’s certainly worth considering the effect of a £10 discount at the pub. And the effect of concentrating people’s outings on just three days of the week.

...

In future, policymakers should heed the lessons from this experience. Rather than trying to encourage a big-bang “back to normal”, governments should settle in for the long haul: encouraging and establishing patterns of behaviour that are safe and consistent with a pandemic.

If the goal is to financially support businesses, many countries have simply continued to give them loans, debt relief or payroll subsidies. If the goal is to get people out and spending on high streets, policies should be designed to keep people spread out (for example, allowing people to spread consumption across the week, and including take-out).

And if the goal is to boost confidence so that people return to normal, well maybe we just can’t do that yet.

Just install a till in their living room and pay the VAT on whatever tea and biscuits you consume.

I'll leave a tripadvisor review to complete the sham.

I think I'll quite miss social distancing when it can safely be stopped. 6 months of generally being given space and not having clearings in the woods barging past or excessive crowds has actually been quite nice, and I'm not going to enjoy having absolutely no personal space in public again.

The idea of forcing my way through the concourses at VP again is my idea of hell, and it's got nothing to do with covid.
